Job summary

Salt Lake Community College is seeking an instructor for the Fire Fighter program to teach and facilitate student learning in various locations. The successful candidate must be currently certified by the Utah Fire Rescue Academy (UFRA) and have at least two years of experience in a fire department. Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States.

Job Summary

Under general supervision, instructs Fire Fighter program classes and skills to community college students. May be assigned to any SLCC location.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities & Knowledge Skills & Abilities
  • Effectively prepare and teach classes to facilitate student learning.
  • Develop, distribute, and adhere to current course outlines and/or syllabi.
  • Demonstrate a depth of understanding in the field of fire fighting and emergency services.
  • Attend required training and department meetings, as invited.
  • Demonstrate and support professional commitment to division, School, and College mission and values.
  • Maintain a supportive attitude toward work, students, colleagues, and administration.
  • Support College policies.
  • Other job-related duties as required.
  • Becomes familiar with, and abides by, all college policies with immediate priority given to those policies that govern interactions with colleagues, staff, administrators, and departments throughout the organization.
  • Maintains professional etiquette in communications with students, staff, faculty, and administrators.
  • Provides appropriate and timely feedback for all assignments.
  • Returns graded assignments in a timely fashion per department standards.
  • Maintains student attendance records (for Financial Aid purposes) and grades.
  • Conducts a variety of appropriate evaluations of student performance.
  • Informs students of progress-to-date periodically and assigns and submits grades by published deadlines.
  • Assists in maintaining a safe and mutually respectful instructional environment.
  • Prepares and submits incident reports to Dean of Student Services for inappropriate student behavior as defined by the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities Policy.
  • Maintains professional and collegial behavior.
  • Handles/responds to student concerns/complaints, and responds to student communications and inquiries promptly (generally within 1-2 days).
  • Maintains professional appearance as defined by the discipline and/or College procedure.
  • Completes all required employee trainings.
  • Knows and enforces FERPA guidelines.
  • Provides ADA accommodations as requested.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Currently certified by the Utah Fire Rescue Academy (UFRA).
  • Two (2) years non-teaching full-time (or full-time equivalent) work experience in a fire department.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certified Advanced Emergency Medical Technician.
