Job summary

Oregon State University seeks a Director of Extension Fire Program and Assistant/Associate Professor (Extension Specialist). The role blends program leadership with an academic appointment to advance wildfire resilience and environmental justice in Oregon.

You will supervise regional specialists, secure external funding, and deliver research-based education and outreach while collaborating with Extension, university units, and external partners. Travel within Oregon is expected.

Qualifications

• Doctoral degree in natural resources management, social sciences, or related field.
• Experience providing informal education about wildland fire.
• Experience leading teams and engaging diverse stakeholders.
• Strong interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel throughout Oregon.

Responsibilities

• Lead development, implementation, and evaluation of education and outreach programs.
• Supervise and support program faculty and staff, fostering a collaborative environment.
• Collaborate across Extension, university units, and external partners to identify issues.
• Build partnerships with state, tribal, federal agencies, NGOs, and stakeholders.
• Represent the program at state, regional and national levels for wildfire policy and resilience.
• Conduct applied research on wildland fire science to support resilience and equity goals.
• Secure external funding and manage program budgets.
• Mentor graduate and undergraduate students and serve on graduate committees.
• Participate in professional and university committees.
• Provide technical assistance and capacity building to partnerships.
• Prepare and deliver scientific presentations and publish results in outlets.
