Job summary

The City of Wheeling seeks a Fire Equipment Mechanic to maintain and repair a wide range of fire vehicles and gear under the Fire Equipment Manager.

This journey-level role covers suspensions, powertrains, brakes, engines, hydraulics, welding, and preventative maintenance on fire engines, ladder trucks, ambulances, and related equipment.

Qualifications

• High school diploma and 5 years of experience in mechanics or related field.
• Experience maintaining fire prevention and suppression equipment and ambulances preferred.
• IAFC fire apparatus mechanics program certification within 2 years of employment.
• Must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

Responsibilities

• Diagnose, troubleshoot and repair suspension, driveline, brakes, steering, powertrain, transmissions, exhaust, fuel, electrical and hydraulic systems.
• Perform auto body and paintwork including rust, collision and welding repair.
• Conduct complete preventative maintenance checks on cars, trucks, fire engines, ladder trucks, ambulances and other fire equipment.
• Road test equipment to assess problems or completed work.
• Field calls for repairs and on-call schedule.
• Order and pickup parts and supplies from vendors.
• Fill out scheduled and unscheduled work orders after each task.

Under general supervision of the Fire Equipment Manager, performs a variety of skilled, journey level mechanic duties in the maintenance and repair of a wide variety of City fire vehicles and equipment. This classification is distinguished from the Sr. Equipment Mechanic by its diversity and complexity of service functions performed.

Essential Functions:

Tasks:

• Performs diagnosis, troubleshooting and complete unit repair in suspension, driveline, brake, steering, powertrain (including gas and diesel engines), transmissions, exhaust, fuel, electrical and hydraulic systems.
• Performs auto body and paintwork (including rust, collision and welding repair).
• Performs complete preventative maintenance checks. These duties will be performed on cars, trucks, fire engines, ladder trucks, ambulances and other fire equipment.
• Repairs and maintains shop equipment.
• Road tests equipment to assess problems or completed work.
• Makes field calls for repairs and is assigned to the on-call schedule.
• May order and pick up parts and supplies from vendors.
• Fills out scheduled and unscheduled work orders after each task assignment.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Other Characteristics:

• Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and techniques used in the repair and maintenance of a variety of automobiles, trucks and equipment.
• Knowledge of operating principles of gasoline and diesel engines and of mechanical repair of light trucks and related equipment, i.e., class 8 fire chassis and ladder trucks
• Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions used in vehicle maintenance and repair.
• Skill in the use and operation of hand/power tools and machinery used in automotive repair work.
• Skill in applying mechanical abilities to the use of welding and smithing equipment.
• Skill in diagnosing defects in automotive equipment and applying approved techniques in remedying defects.
• Skill in adapting available tools and repairing parts to specific repair situations.
• Skill in following oral and written instructions.
• Skill operating assigned office computers/software.
• Skill in the application of communication and interpersonal skills.

Materials and Equipment:

Manufacturers' Manuals & CD's Automobiles & Trucks Department Hand and Power Tools

Division Equipment (Scanning tools, hydraulic lifts, brake lathes, hydraulic cranes, forklifts, etc.)

Mental and Physical Abilities:

Mental work efforts involve application of oral instructions from the manager and written instructions from manuals requiring basic decision making and assuming responsibility for equipment maintenance and repairs which could impact on other employees' ability to perform their duties. Physical requirements include the ability to stand for up to four (4) hours, ability to move moderate to heavy (50-100 lbs) objects short distances on a routine basis, ability to stoop, bend, twist, and work in awkward positions while performing job duties.

Working Conditions:

Work involves skilled, technical work in an enclosed automotive repair shop with proximity to exhaust fumes or outdoors in inclement weather. Must provide basic personal hand tool up to 3/4" drive.

Qualifications:

Qualifications: High school diploma and (5) five years of experience in mechanics, maintenance management, welding and cutting or closely related area. An equivalent combination of education and experience which indicates possession of the knowledge, skills and other characteristics may be substituted for the above qualifications. Experience maintaining and repairing fire prevention and suppression equipment and ambulances preferred. Must secure IAFC fire apparatus mechanics program certification within (2) two years of employment. Must possess a valid commercial driver's license (CDL).
