Job summary

Chino Valley Fire District is seeking a Fire Apparatus and Fleet Mechanic to service and repair fire service vehicles and equipment. Under supervision, you will perform maintenance, inspections, and repairs on pumps, aerials, engines, and hydraulics.

The role requires a high school diploma, CA CDL, EVT certifications, and 3 years of mechanical repair experience; applicants should be prepared for after-hours calls and to maintain safety standards.

Qualifications

• Must possess a High School Diploma or equivalent.
• California Class A or B CDL with favorable driving record (or ability to obtain within six months).
• Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) I certification within two years; EVT II within three years; EVT III within four years.
• Three years of mechanical repair experience on light and heavy gasoline/diesel machinery or equivalent.

Responsibilities

• Conducts orientation and training of new employees and ensures safety practices and equipment maintenance standards.
• Performs safety inspections, work-quality control, routine and preventive maintenance, repair heavy truck chassis, fire components, pumpers, aerials, ambulances, and other District vehicles.
• Inspects engines, transmissions, brakes, electrical, and related systems; diagnoses and repairs components.
• Operates shop equipment and tools; documents repairs and maintains turnover records.
• Drives service vehicles and Fire apparatus into and out of the Fire Shop bays for maintenance and road tests.

• Inspectswheelsandtires;performsalltiremaintenancefunctions,includingdismounting,repairing, remounting,and balancing varioustiresin service on District fleet vehicles.
• Performsfabricationtasksusingvariouswelding and cuttingtoolsand equipment.

• Responds to road calls and performs on-site diagnostics and repairs on vehicles and equipment.

• Maintains shop inventory by coordinating standard part and tool purchases with vendors; tracks and updates parts and service records.
• Arranges for the delivery and return of fire vehicles and equipment as part of exterior repairs.
• Overhauls and repairs gas and diesel engines and transmissions, including valves, pistons, piston rings, main bearings, and crankshafts.
• Repairs and maintains district generators and compressors, including service records.
• Performs primary engine diagnosis involving testing, analysis, adjustments, and modifications of compression and hydraulic systems and emissions systems.
• Repairs front suspension systems, including bushings, kingpins, tie rods, and ball joints.
• Evaluates how specialized electrical, electronic, and mechanical adaptations of equipment can be completed in a cost-effective and timely manner, either with shop personnel or other service providers.
• Drives service vehicles and Fire apparatus into and out of the Fire Shop bays and other locations for maintenance work and to perform road test drives.
• May participate in District apparatus specifications and procurement with a designated team.
• May needtoperformemergencyrepairworkafterhours,includingnights,weekends,andholidays.
• Keeps current with new technology, including participating in District-wide required training.
• Disposesofhazardouswaste by safetyguidelines.
• Assistswith Districtevents,functions, andtrainingforfirefighters/drivers.
• Prioritize work assignments based on the District’s evolving priorities and day-to-day needs.
• Review service orders or work requests and independently diagnoses causes of more complex problems determines the extent of needed repairs or adjustments and whether exterior repairs or manufacturer recall work might be required

Education:

• Completion of HighSchoolDiploma or equivalent.
• Possession of a California Class A or B California Driver License (CDL) with a favorable driving record, or the ability to acquire within six months of employment.
• Must obtain Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) I certification within two years of hire date.
• As a pre-requisite for D step advancement, must obtain Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) II certification within three years of hire date.
• As a pre-requisite for E step advancement, must obtain Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) III certification within four years of hire date.
• Theincumbentmustmaintain allcertificationsthroughoutthecourseofemploymentin thisclassification.

Experience:

• Three(3)yearsofmechanicalrepairandmaintenanceworkonlightandheavygasoline/dieselmachinery, orequivalentcombinationofeducation andexperience.
• Knowledgeandexperience,includingtherepair,service,andmaintenanceoffireequipment,isrequired.

Highly Desired:

• Emergency Vehicle Technician Series I, II & III.
• ASE mechanic certification in applicable fields.
• MVAC Technician Certificate – EPA Clean Air Section 609.

Physical Profile

Work is performed in a typical automotive repair shop, field, or fire station with the following characteristics:
