Job summary

The City of Susanville is seeking an Assistant Fire Chief to lead fire suppression, EMS, hazmat, and prevention programs. You will coordinate emergency responses, supervise firefighters, and manage training and equipment maintenance.

The role reports to the Public Safety Chief and may act as Chief when needed. Preferred candidates hold a Bachelor’s degree in fire science/administration and have at least five years of municipal experience, including three years in command.

Qualifications

• Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in fire science or fire administration, with related field coursework.
• Five years of municipal fire suppression and prevention experience, including at least three years of command experience at the Fire Captain level.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate emergency incidents including fire suppression, EMS and hazmat.
• Oversee staff training and apparatus maintenance; report to Public Safety Chief.
• May serve as Acting Public Safety Chief in absence of the Chief.
• Fulfill responsibilities per the Firefighters Unit MOU and city HR guidelines.

Assistant Fire Chief

The City of Susanville offers an excellent benefits package which

The base annual salary for the Assistant Fire Chief is
$69,380-$105,132. This position is eligible for overtime.

The City provides the following benefits

General Leave

• 1.Vacation: 3.69 hours accrued/pay period in first year, increasing to 4.62 in years 1-5, 5.23 in years 5-10, 6.15 in years 10-15, 7.69 in years 15-20, and 9.23 for 20+ years
• Sick Leave: Accrue 12 hours per month with Sick Leave conversion program to convert unused sick leave to vacation
• Holidays: 14 paid holidays per year
• Medical, Dental, & Vision Insurance: 90/10 plan provided through Anthem Blue Cross as well as Dental and Vision coverage. The policy covers employee, spouses, and any eligible dependents, with the current employee contribution of $30 per month.
• Term Life Insurance: $15,000 with Health Coverage and $25,000 additional
• Retirement: The City participates in the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS). For legacy members, the benefit level is 3% @50. For new members, the benefit level is 2.7%@57.

Assistant Fire Chief City of Susanville

The men and women of the City of Susanville Fire Department are

The Assistant Fire Chief performs a variety of responsible management,

technical, and administrative work in commanding and coordinating

emergency incidents including fire suppression, emergency medical

services, hazardous material services, fire prevention, staff training and

apparatus maintenance. This position reports directly to the Public Safety

QUALIFICATIONS

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or

university with major course work in fire science, fire administration or

a closely related field;

Five (5) years of increasingly responsible municipal fire suppression

and prevention experience, including at least three (3) years of

command experience at the Fire Captain level.

College teaching credentials are desirable.

REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATES

High school diploma or GED equivalent;

Possession of California Class C driver’s license with Firefighter

Endorsement “F” or higher driver’s license class;

California Chief Fire Officer certification or ability to complete

certification coursework within twelve (12) months of appointment and

ability to complete certification within eighteen (18) months;

Possession of California State Fire Training Fire Officer or Company

Officer, or its equivalent;

Current California EMT-B or ability to obtain within twelve (12)

months of appointment;

California State P.C. 832 A or ability to obtain within twelve (12) months

of appointment
