Job summary

The City of Elizabethtown is seeking a Chief of the Fire Department to lead day-to-day operations, personnel, facilities, and equipment, reporting to the mayor and city administrator. The chief ensures firefighting, prevention, and training programs, maintains relationships with agencies, and oversees emergency management.

Qualifications

• Graduation from accredited High School or GED.
• 10 years of progressively responsible experience in firefighting or fire prevention, incl. 3+ years supervisory.
• Meet qualifications established by KRS 95.
• Resident of Hardin County, KY.
• English communication skills (spoken and written).
• Valid Kentucky driver's license.
• Maintain NFPA 1582 firefighter medical/physical requirements.

Responsibilities

• Direct and manage department personnel policies.
• Assign personnel and equipment to facilities to ensure staffing and equipment for emergencies.
• Prepare department budget, manage facilities, and plan improvements.
• Maintain necessary departmental records.
• Oversee fire prevention bureau and training activities.
• Command fire suppression forces, generally through subordinates.
• Apply city policies to department operations.
• Maintain relationships with county, state, and federal agencies.
• Oversee city safety program; emergency management & search & rescue director.
• Serve as fire marshal and coordinate with city engineer/building official on fire matters.
• Incident commander at hazardous materials incidents.
• Maintain availability for duties outside regular hours.
• Perform additional duties as assigned by mayor or city administrator.
