The Fire Captain serves as a first level supervisor in Rochester Fire Department providing leadership and direction to an assigned fire company. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, responding to emergency incidents and assuming the role as Incident Commander in accordance with departmental policy; providing supervision to assigned employees; exhibiting leadership effectiveness through building an engaged team and acting as a positive reflection and advancing the vision of the City and Fire Department; preparing federal, state, and department reports; conducting inspections and hazard assessments; and facilitating fire prevention activities, educational programs, and training courses within the community.
The work below is representative of the scope of work performed within this job classification. Individual job duties will vary based on work assignment.
An Associate's degree with at least five (5) years of experience in a classified position with the Rochester Fire Department, immediately preceding the application for promotion, with at least two (2) years in the position of Firefighter.
Previous supervisory experience
the principles of modern fire department administration, organization and operation; theories, principles and practices of fire science, emergency rescue, medical emergencies and hazardous materials programs; department rules and regulations and standard operating procedures; federal, state and local laws and regulations pertaining to the administration and provision of Fire Department programs and services; budgeting practices and techniques; and mechanical, chemical and related characteristics of a wide variety of flammable, explosive and hazardous materials and objects.
operating all firefighting apparatus; leading and directing others; organizing and prioritizing work; exercising good judgment in stressful situations; training and mentoring employees; and effective communication techniques.
demonstrate commitment to the City of Rochester's organizational values statements and standards; plan, organize and direct the work of employees under stressful and dangerous circumstances; plan and coordinate training activities for subordinate employees; quickly assess emergency situations and determine the best strategy for resolution; prepare, review and maintain a variety of operating reports and records; communicate effectively and present ideas clearly and concisely both orally and in writing; supervise and evaluate the performance of subordinate employees; utilize management information systems.
