Job summary

The City of Coon Rapids is seeking Career Firefighters to join a dedicated team serving the community with bravery and integrity. You will respond to fires and emergencies, inspect buildings, and maintain equipment while upholding core values of service, trust, teamwork, and excellence.

Minimum qualifications include 18 years of age, a high school diploma or GED, MN driver’s license, Firefighter II certification, and EMT certification (NREMT).

2027 hiring range: $87,767.68 to $105,501.76 per hour depending on qualifications and experience.

Essential Duties

  • Responds to fire alarms and other emergency calls to extinguish or control fires.
  • Conducts fire prevention inspections and pre-fire planning of buildings.
  • Maintains fire apparatus and equipment
  • Attends regular and assigned training to maintain and upgrade firefighter skills.
  • Performs as driver/operator of fire apparatus.
  • Performs general maintenance work pertaining to upkeep of Fire Department apparatus, equipment and buildings.

Must possess
  • Good knowledge of City streets and physical layout of City.
  • Good geographical knowledge of the City.
  • Neat appearance at all times, including facial hair requirements to pass and maintain SCBA usage.
Minimum Qualifications
  • 18 years of age
  • High School Diploma of equivalent graduate certificate (GED)
  • Valid MN Drivers license or equivalent state drivers license (must obtain MN within 6 months of hire) with a good driving record
  • Current Firefighter II certification from the Minnesota Fire Service Certification Board or equivalent certification accredited through IFSAC or NFPA Pro Board or Current State of Minnesota Firefighter License from the Minnesota Board of Fire Training and Education
  • Current certification at the level of Emergency Medical Technician through the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) at time of hire

Equipment/Job Location

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. This position will work primarily in the field. The work environment may at times be noisy with elements of personal danger in dealing with emergency situations. This position works closely with others.

Conditions of Employment
  • Must comply with organizational and departmental policies.
  • Must obtain and maintain a valid Class B MN driver’s license within six months of hire date.
  • Must be licensed through the NREMT as an Emergency Medical Technician
  • Coon Rapids Fire personnel cannot be an active member of any other fire department while serving on the Coon Rapids Fire Department.
  • Must obtain and maintain State of Minnesota Firefighter license.
  • Pass Psychological Exam, Medical Exam, Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT), and background check.
