Job summary

Capital City Fire Rescue in Juneau, AK, seeks an experienced Fire Captain to supervise a shift of Firefighter EMTs, Paramedics, and Engineers. This full-time role oversees incident command, training, and equipment readiness, with live-in station housing during 24-hour shifts.

Qualifications

• Graduation from high school or the equivalent.
• Five (5) years of experience as a full-time career Firefighter EMT.
• Three (3) years of experience must have been at CCFR as a career Firefighter EMT II or higher.
• Valid driver’s license at time of appointment and for continued employment.
• Acceptable performance ratings for the last two years.
• Certifications: Alaska EMT II or Paramedic and CPR; Blue Card Incident Command; IFSAC or Alaska Airport Rescue certifications within specified timelines.

WORKING HOURS AND LOCATION

CCFR provides 24/7 emergency response for the City and Borough of Juneau. All permanent full-time positions work 24-hour shifts and live at the station during their shift. CCFR has two live-in stations, Station 1 located in downtown Juneau, and Station 2 located near the Juneau International Airport. In addition, we have three unstaffed stations in the Douglas, Auke Bay, and Tee Harbor areas

Typical Responsibilities

DESCRIPTION OF WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

Under the general direction of the Assistant Chief, Fire Captains are responsible for supervising, training, and evaluating a shift of Firefighter EMT’s, Firefighter Paramedics, and Fire Engineers, as well as performing all the functions of a Firefighter EMT II. Additionally, Fire Captains are responsible for overseeing the cleaning, inspection, and maintenance of fire department equipment, apparatus, and facilities, and maintaining records related to department activities. Fire Captains are responsible for commanding emergency responses and may serve as Incident Commander. The Fire Captain is the first supervisory level.

Typical responsibilities include the following (in addition to the responsibilities assigned at the lower levels):

Supervises and evaluates the performance of a shift of Firefighter EMT’s, Firefighter Paramedics, and Fire Engineers; Ensures operational readiness of personnel; Promotes shift cohesion and teamwork; Ensures minimum staffing levels are maintained.

Determines route to be taken to respond to emergency incident locations; determines required actions to mitigate emergencies; calls for additional support, as needed.

Commands personnel, including career and volunteer staff as well as special teams, and oversees all operations at emergency incidents until relieved; May serve as Incident Commander at emergency incidents.

Oversees the training of personnel in department rules, policies, and procedures; emergency medicine (EMS); fire and rescue operations; use of equipment and apparatus; care and maintenance of fire stations and related facilities; May arrange for outside training as needed.

Participates in training to maintain and enhance firefighting and emergency medical knowledge and skills. Maintains certification at EMT II or above. Maintains all required firefighter certifications.

Supervises and participates in drills with volunteer and career personnel.

Oversees the cleaning, inspection, and servicing of vehicles, apparatus, and equipment; ensures all equipment is in a condition of readiness.

Oversees the cleaning, inspection, and maintenance of fire stations and other related facilities.

Records all emergency response activity in a database; Maintains records of station activities; Records training activities in a database; Prepares activity and training reports.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Graduation from high school or the equivalent.

Experience:

Five (5) years of experience as a full-time career Firefighter EMT.

Three (3) years of experience must have been

at CCFR as a career Firefighter EMT II or higher

The applicant must have an overall Acceptable (or better) rating on their Annual Employee Performance Evaluations for the last two (2) years.

Certifications:

Certified as a State of Alaska EMT II or Paramedic, and CPR,

Must

achieve IFSAC or State of Alaska Airport Rescue Firefighting certification

within 18 months of hire

within 24 months of hire

As a condition of continued employment, applicants who are hired as Fire Captain must continue to maintain certification:

IFSAC Company Officer I, IFSAC Fire Instructor I, IFSAC or State of Alaska Airport Rescue Fire Fighter and an EMT II or higher with Capital City Fire Rescue to perform the duties of this position.
