Qualifications

  • Certifications in Driver Operator, Fire Service Instructor I, ETT, and Rescue Tech preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to fires, vehicle accidents, EMS, and HazMat calls.
  • Make management decisions during emergencies and non-emergency operations.
  • Develop strategic fire suppression and rescue plans as Initial Incident Commander.
  • Operate equipment, apparatus, hoses, ladders, and rescue tools.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to on-call and full-time staff.
  • Review and file reports; maintain training and attendance records.
  • Ensure SOPs and policies are followed; manage inventory of tools and equipment.
  • Assist in training exercises and program delivery.
  • Research and procure equipment and supplies for department use.
  • Participate in building inspections and fire prevention programs.
  • Assist with public education initiatives.

Job description

Job Summary

Under the direction of the Fire Service Battalion Chief, this position is responsible for providing direction to an assigned shift of fire service personnel in the areas of fire suppression, rescue operations, hazardous materials response, fire training, apparatus/equipment readiness, safety, and facility operations and maintenance.

Work is performed and duties are carried out in accordance with established policies, procedures, and Borough core values: Accountability, Customer Focus, Dedication, Integrity, Responsiveness and Teamwork.

This is a 56-hour position (Kelly Shift Schedule)

Pay Grade

P-CPT 1 - P-CPT 5 - DOE

Minimum Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent, and specialized training in the field of work including college courses, certificate program, apprenticeship, etc.

Five years of progressively responsible experience in the occupational field, sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, including one year of supervisory experience.

Relevant experience may include: active membership in fire service operations; supervision; organization and professional communication; scheduling; discipline or other management.

Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the State of Alaska for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. Must be at least 19 years of age with one (1) year of driving experience.

Possession of State of Alaska Firefighter II certification required at time of hire. Possession of State of Alaska Firefighter I certification required as a prerequisite.

Possession of Driver Operator certification preferred at the time of hire. If not currently certified, you must enroll in the next available course offering and successfully complete certification within twelve (12) months of hire.

Possession of Fire Service Instructor I certification, preferred at the time of hire. If not currently certified, you must enroll in the next available course offering and successfully complete certification within twelve (12) months of hire.

Possession of Emergency Trauma Technician (ETT) certification preferred.

Possession of Rescue Tech certification that includes automotive extrication and basic rope rescue skills, preferred at the time of hire.

Completion of required Incident Command System (ICS) courses, ICS 100 and IS 700 within ninety (90) days of hire, ICS 300 and ICS 400 within nine (9) months of hire, and ICS 200 and IS 800 within one (1) year of hire.

Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background check, drug screen, respirator fit test, physical ability test (PAT), and NFPA 1582 physical exam in addition to an annual respirator fit test, PAT test and NFPA 1582. Must complete a baseline audiometry screening and will be required to undergo annual testing as part of the Hearing Conservation Program. Must complete the Hepatitis B vaccination series and complete Tuberculosis (TB) screening, or provide signed declinations, in accordance with applicable health and safety guidelines.

Duties/Responsibilities

Responds to various emergency situations including, but not limited to structure fires, vehicle fires, motor vehicle collisions, EMS and Hazmat calls for service.

Makes management decisions during emergency and non-emergency operations and functions.

Develops strategic fire suppression, rescue or other emergency response plans as an Initial Incident Commander.

Operates a variety of equipment, apparatus, tools, hoses, appliances, ladders, rescue equipment, etc.

Provides leadership, supervision, and guidance to assigned on-call and full-time staff.

Assists others in evaluation of performance of subordinate employees.

Reviews, completes and files reports; maintains training an attendance records.

Implements tactical emergency operations as a crew leader.

Reviews and ensures compliance with department standard operating procedures, guidelines and policies.

Develops and maintains an inventory management program for all tools and equipment.

Ensures that apparatus and equipment is properly cared for, fully operational, cleaned, and returned to service after emergency operations or training exercises.

Assists in the development and delivery of training exercises and programs.

Researches, recommends and purchases equipment and supplies for departmental use.

Participates in the inspection of buildings and other structures in fire prevention programs.

Assists with the implementation and delivery of public education.

Performs related duties.
