Fire Apparatus Mechanic I This is the entry level class in the Fire Apparatus Mechanic series. This class is distinguished from the Fire Apparatus Mechanic II by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within the series. This class may be used as a training class or the class may contain positions wherein employees perform routine tasks on a permanent basis and therefore remain at an entry level.
Fire Apparatus Mechanic II This is the full journey level class in the Fire Apparatus Mechanic series. This class is distinguished from the Fire Apparatus Mechanic I by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned and from the Fire Apparatus Mechanic III by not being assigned the most complex tasks and duties and not being expected to perform with the same independence of direction and judgment. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the I level, or when filled from the outside, candidates have prior experience.
Fire Apparatus Mechanic III This is the advanced journey level class in the Fire Apparatus Mechanic series. This class is distinguished from the Fire Apparatus Mechanic II by the performance of the most complex and difficult types of tasks and duties, including leading, training and reviewing the work of lower level classes. Employees at this level are required to be fully trained in all work unit procedures.
Fire Apparatus Mechanic I Receives immediate supervision from higher level staff.
Fire Apparatus Mechanic II Receives general supervision from higher level staff.
Fire Apparatus Mechanic III Receives general supervision from higher level staff. Exercises functional and technical supervision over lower level staff.
A civil service examination will be conducted in accordance with the Civil Service Rules of the city of Las Vegas. The supplemental questions are the examination. Falsification of information may result in disqualification from a recruitment or removal from a city position. Additional information will not be accepted after the closing date. The supplemental questions are weighted 100% for placement on an eligible list, and must be worked on individually by the applicant only. The supplemental questions of all qualified applicants will be reviewed for placement on an eligible list. The eligible list will remain in effect for a period of 6 months from the date of certification and may be extended for a period of up to 2 years.
You must score 70% or higher on the examination to be placed on the eligible list. The purpose of this recruitment is to establish an eligible list for current and/ or future openings which may include part-time or full-time positions.
Final candidate selection will include list placement and will include hiring interview. Any individual offered employment will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test, complete background check, to include education and employment verification, and may be required to demonstrate the ability to perform the physical requirements of the job. Some positions may require preliminary background checks. The purpose of this recruitment is to establish an eligible list for current and/or future openings which may include part-time or full-time positions.
Four years experience in the service and repair of cars, trucks and automotive equipment, including some experience in diesel and electrical and electronic systems repair.
Equivalent to graduation from high school.
Possession of a Nevada Class B Commercial Drivers License, as well as an “N” endorsement (Tank Vehicle) within 6 months of date of hire, and maintenance thereafter.
Within six months of appointment, possession of the National Institute for Automotive Excellence (NIASE) certification in engine repair or heavy-duty gasoline engines, and maintenance thereafter.
Within eighteen months of appointment, possession of NIASE certification in brakes, and maintenance thereafter.
Theory, maintenance, operation and repair of gasoline engines.
Basic operation and repair of diesel engines.
Automotive parts and apparatus.
Vehicle electrical systems.
Automotive ignition, brake, fuel and cooling systems.
Automotive steering mechanisms and front-end assemblies.
