Job summary

The George Washington University in Washington, DC is seeking a Fire Alarm Technician to support the Fire/Life Safety team across GW campuses. Reporting to the Fire Alarm Shop Supervisor, you will investigate and repair fire alarm and sprinkler systems, develop maintenance plans, and ensure regulatory compliance.

Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or GED plus experience or a bachelor's degree, with NICET Level I and the ability to obtain Level II within 12 months.

  • Must possess NICET Level I and the ability to obtain NICET Level II within 12 months of hire.
  • NICET Level II is preferred.
  • Proficiency with computerized tools and testing equipment programs, as well as contemporary software packages is preferred.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices based on industry standards, injury, and illness prevention practices is preferred.
  • Ability to prepare sketches for minor construction projects is preferred.
  • Ability to prepare written correspondence to federal, state, and local agencies is preferred.
  • Ability to understand and interpret complex fire/life safety regulations is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Develops relationships with risk management and university offices.

I. JOB OVERVIEW

Job Description Summary:

Facilities, Buildings & Grounds ( FBG ) is currently seeking a Fire Alarm Technician to help support the Universities mission in education. FBG is a part of GW’s Facilities, Planning and Construction Management Division ( FCPM ), which maintains GW’s property and grounds on all three campuses.
Reporting to the Fire Alarm Shop Supervisor, the Fire Alarm Technician supports the Fire/Life Safety team to effectively investigate and identify fire alarm and fire sprinkler system problems and develop plans to repair and maintain these systems throughout the University. More specifically, the Fire Alarm Technician is responsible for:

  • Evaluates facilities/equipment to identify unsafe conditions and develops preventative and/or improvement maintenance schedules for all fire systems and their components.
  • Inspects fire systems to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulatory agencies; designs and plans fire system alterations.
  • Works with Risk Management and Housing Operations leads to inspect, identify, and facilitate corrections of regulatory violations.
  • Maintains knowledge of Federal, State, and Local safety regulations, protocol, codes, and procedures pertaining to fire/life safety.
  • May serve in or represent supervisor at various meetings that may impact the unit.
  • Enhances professional knowledge and skills by attending job related seminars, workshops, conferences and/or reviewing published literature.
  • Develops a close relationship with the office of risk management and other University offices.
  • Performs other work related duties as requested. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

The Fire Alarm Technician may work around and/or with machine tools that present certain dangers, and all safety precautions must be followed.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a high school diploma/ GED plus 1.5 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. The successful candidate must have possession of NICET Level I and the ability to obtain NICET Level II within 12 months of hire.
