Job summary

NYC Housing Authority is seeking an Associate Inspector (Electrical) to oversee inspections, testing and repairs of fire alarm and electrical installations. You will ensure code compliance, supervise staff, and coordinate with contractors and in-house teams to maintain high workmanship standards.

The role requires extensive electrical experience, relevant licenses or certifications, and the ability to manage field operations while ensuring safety and quality.

Qualifications

• Six years of full-time experience as electrician, designer, or inspector of electrical installations for fire alarm or related systems.
• Four years of experience plus 60 credits toward a degree in electrical engineering or equivalent, or two years of formal electrical training.
• Completion of a multi-year apprenticeship in electrical trade or inspection, with relevant experience.
• A professional engineer license or registered architect license per NYS Education Law.
• Equivalent combinations of education and experience may apply.

Job description

Under the general direction of the Fire Alarm Unit Leader, the responsibilities of the Fire Alarm Technician include but are not limited to the following:

• Independently perform inspection, service, repairs, installation, and programming of commercial fire alarm systems.


• Independently perform troubleshooting and fault diagnostics of fire alarm devices, wiring, and software.


• May supervise and evaluate the work of subordinate personnel and assist in training staff members.


• Provide field oversight and QA/QC review of contractor work and verify compliance with applicable Codes and Standards. Witnesses and conducts inspections and tests to verify that installations and repairs are completed in a workmanlike manner and follow good engineering practices.


• Set priorities, schedules and coordinates work by contractors and in-house personnel. Regularly visits and inspects sites.


• May issue change orders to original specifications to accommodate changing field conditions or to correct specification errors or omissions; upon Supervisory approval of recommendations, prepares change orders.

ASSOCIATE INSPECTOR (ELECTRICA - 31643

Minimum Qualifications

1. Six years of full-time satisfactory experience as an electrician, designer, or inspector of electrical installations for light, heat and/or power distribution, traffic signals, fire alarm detection or communication systems; or


2. Four years of experience as described in “1” above, and one of the following: (a) 60 credits towards a degree in electrical engineering or electrical engineering technology from an accredited college or university; or (b) Two years of full-time training in an acceptable electrical program in an accredited technical school;


3. Completion of an apprentice program, at least three years in length, in the electrical trade or electrical inspection and either (a) three years of experience as described in “1” above or (b) one year of experience as described in “1” above and 60 credits or two years of education as described in “2” above;


4. A license as a professional engineer or registered architect issued pursuant to the New York State Education Law.


5. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1,” “2,” or “3” above.


6. To be eligible for placement to Assignment Level II, individuals other than licensed professional engineers or registered architects must have, after meeting the minimum requirements, at least one year of experience as described in “1” above, in a supervisory capacity.

Preferred Skills

• FDNY Certificate of Fitness S-98, S-12, S-13 or ability to obtain within 90-days of employment and maintain throughout employment

• Factory training certificates from Edwards, Kidde, Notifier


• NYC Master Electrician


• NFPA Certified Fire Protection Specialist


• NYS Code Enforcement Official certificate
