Job description

Overview

Sciens Building Solutions is seeking an experienced Fire Alarm Systems Technician with programming, commissioning, and troubleshooting capabilities. The role works closely with sales, project teams, and clients to ensure a sound design and seamless installation and commissioning of fire alarm solutions. The position requires meticulous attention to detail, effective human relations, and strong communication skills.

Responsibilities
  • Review system layouts and coordinate with engineering, project management, and sales for successful project execution.
  • Produce field surveys and daily project logs of activity.
  • Program and commission complex fire alarm systems, leading to final acceptance by customers and authorities having jurisdiction.
  • Produce detailed commissioning and inspection reports in accordance with NFPA standards.
  • Resolve complex troubleshooting issues effectively.
  • Deliver projects on schedule and within cost budgets.
  • Program systems via laptop computers.
  • Assist in overseeing project inventory and vehicle inventory.
  • Provide support, guidance, and expertise to other technicians.
  • Manage job scheduling and progress efficiently, with a strong focus on quality.
  • Demonstrate proper operation of equipment and control units to customers and explain system use and response procedures.
  • Comply with industry standard procedures and Sciens safety programs and policies.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two to five years of experience in a technician role within the fire‑life safety industry.
  • Ability to program and commission mid‑range fire alarm systems independently.
  • Ability to terminate fire alarm control units and field equipment with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to communicate and coordinate with onsite contractors.
  • Intermediate understanding of fire alarm circuit integrity and troubleshooting for circuit opens, shorts, or ground conditions.
  • Intermediate computer knowledge related to software installation.
  • Intermediate knowledge of NFPA 72 code requirements for fire alarm system installation.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Section 907 of the International Fire Code or state‑adopted fire code.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Section 909 of the International Building Code or state‑adopted building code.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Article 760 of NFPA 70 (electrical code).
  • State, local, contract, and/or product‑specific certifications as required.
  • NICET I certification.
  • Knowledge of state fire procedures, filing, and requirements.
  • Ability to read fire system design drawings.
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines with a sense of urgency.
  • Ability to work independently with some supervision.
  • Knowledge of OSHA safety standards and ability to obtain OSHA 10 certification.
  • Proficient in issue resolution.
  • Excellent organizational, decision‑making, and communication skills.
  • Physical fitness to perform demanding work, including lifting up to 25 pounds regularly and up to 50 pounds occasionally, working from heights, climbing ladders, and standing/walking most of the day.
  • Ability to travel occasionally overnight, as needed.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
