Job summary

Ahern is offering a Fire Alarm Design Intern position in Chicago, IL. This hands-on internship goes beyond coffee runs, letting you design fire alarm layouts and assist with 3D BIM coordination using NavisWorks and AutoCAD-based tools.

You’ll perform hydraulic calculations, prepare submittals for permits, and contribute to project documentation while learning from seasoned professionals in a supportive, family-owned environment that values growth and practical experience.

Qualifications

• Prior experience working in AutoCAD and strong math and analytical skills is preferred.

How You Will Contribute

This is a great opportunity to use your education while playing a key role in various fire suppression system projects. As an Intern, you will exercise your attention to detail while designing the layout of fire alarm systems and special hazards fire protection systems using AutoCAD-based software. Additional responsibilities include computer-generated hydraulic calculations, submittal drawings to obtain required building permits, 3D BIM coordination using NavisWorks, project scheduling, on-site field surveys, material stock listing for pre-fabrication, installation drawings, and preparing close-out and project operation and maintenance documents.

What You Need To Qualify

Prior experience working in AutoCAD and strong math and analytical skills is preferred. Candidates should be in good academic standing. Knowledge of the construction industry is helpful.
