Job summary

One Hat One Hand is seeking a Finisher to join our design and fabrication team in San Francisco. The role involves applying cabinet-grade spray finishes, high-quality roller finishes, and other finishes across diverse projects, requiring attention to detail and strong collaboration with peers.

The Finishing Department Manager oversees performance; candidates should be comfortable with weekends/evenings as needed and maintain inventory, safety, and quality standards throughout the finish process.

One Hat One Hand is a design and fabrication company specializing in architectural placemaking, large-scale public art, product prototyping and experiential design. We are looking for a Finisher to help build our team!

Our team of designers, fabricators, artists, welders & technologists work with artisans and builders to create large-scale placemaking features, art fabrication and specialty installations. We collaborate with our clients every step of the way, taking pride in the talents and creative skills of our team. We work hard to produce seemingly impossible installations through thoughtful design, hands-on fabrication, and technology integration.

One Hat One Hand’s 25,000 square foot studio houses our administrative offices and is equipped with a wood shop, metal shop, paint shop with spray booth, CNC router facility and a daylight studio for a variety of functions.

FINISHER / PAINTER
OVERVIEW:

A Finisher is responsible to the Finishing Department Manager (FDM) as it relates to all painting and scenic treatments for a diverse range of ongoing jobs. The ability to prepare various substrates and apply cabinet-grade spray finishes, high-quality roller finishes, scenic painting techniques and other finishes (including but not limited to industrial coatings, mold-making and casting, carving, texturing, faux finishes) is critical to this role. As part of the One Hat One Hand team, a finisher must demonstrate an excellent work ethic including attention to detail, time management, workflow management, self-motivation, and interpersonal communication skills; ability to collaborate and work as part of a team; flexible schedule, including weekends and evenings as necessary.

POSITION IN ORGANIZATION:
  • Reports To: Finishing Department Manager
  • Department: Finishing
  • Budget Responsibilities: Time Tracking per project via Tsheets. Receipt tracking-noting Job Number on job-separated receipts; collecting receipts in a safe folder; helping input receipts EOD in Expense Sheet when needed
OVERALL DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Produce high quality finishes on a variety of substrates and forms, meeting One Hat One Hand’s standards
  • Review build drawings and follow up with questions, looking ahead for problems and confirming order of operations
  • Produce samples as needed
  • Manage own time and execute any job to meet its given deadline
  • Organizing and labeling parts and materials across the duration of a project
  • Maintaining an orderly paint shop
  • Confirm approval of final product and make adjustments based on FDM and Project Manager feedback
  • Ensure completed projects are protected, packed, and labeled properly for a successful delivery and installation
  • Keeping written record of products and processes for each project
  • Packing kits for on site work and loading them safely into pickup trucks and vans
  • Communicate effectively within the Finishing department and with other departments using the English language both in person and on Slack
  • A positive attitude, sense of humor, and a cool head under pressure. Consideration of team morale for when improvisation and overtime are needed
  • Lending help to other departments as needed
KNOWLEDGE / EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
  • Experience with a variety of styles and techniques of painting and finishing
  • Color mixing, color matching, layout, and faux treatment skills
  • Interpret build drawings and develop processes to execute the finishes with the appropriate level of quality
  • Ability to organize and maintain inventory of painting supplies and tools
  • Be comfortable working at heights on ladders and personnel lifts
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Ability to work with an active production team and balance multiple jobs and deadlines
  • Excellent problem solving abilities
  • Knowledge of HVLP spray equipment
  • Knowledge of different paint products - latex paints, 2k products, industrial coatings, etc
  • Knowledge of different solvents and when to use them - mineral spirits, denatured alcohol, acetone, etc
  • Knowledge of different texture mediums and application methods
  • Ability to sand and prep a multitude of substrates for a high level of finish - wood, metal, plastic, foam
  • Ability to execute high quality spray, roller, and brush finishes
  • Knowledge of mold-making and casting processes
  • Knowledge of proper cleanup and disposal of paint materials, solvent-soaked rags, etc
  • Dress in appropriate work clothing and have safety toe shoes for on site work
  • A valid and current driver's license
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to lift 25-50 pounds to carry equipment and supplies as needed
  • Ability to occasionally operate orbital sanders for lengths of time
  • Indoor warehouse environment with moderate noise
  • Understands the responsibility of protecting oneself and crew from hazardous/toxic materials by using safety equipment such as skin, eye, hearing, and breathing protection.
