Job summary

Hanleyri in Portsmouth, RI is seeking a dedicated fine gardener to join our design-and-build team. You’ll perform maintenance on high-end residential estates, focusing on plant health, pruning, and seasonal care.

You’ll work with a crew of horticulturists and designers, read landscape plans, and help install trees and perennials. A valid driver’s license and ability to work outdoors in all weather are required.

Qualifications

• One year of fine gardening or horticultural experience.
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to Portsmouth office.
• Ability to read and follow landscape plans.
• Strong plant knowledge and understanding of seasonal maintenance tasks.
• Basic IPM knowledge.
• Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Ability to use hand tools and landscape equipment safely.
• Clear communication and teamwork skills.

Responsibilities

• Performing fine gardening maintenance such as pruning, deadheading, weeding, and mulching.
• Monitoring plant health and identifying issues related to pests, disease, or soil conditions.
• Assisting with the installation of trees, shrubs, and perennials on landscape projects.
• Supporting seasonal garden work including spring and fall cleanups.
• Working collaboratively with crew leaders and horticulturists to ensure high-quality results.
• Maintaining clean, organized tools, vehicles, and job sites.
• Communicating effectively with team members and supervisors to complete tasks efficiently.

We are a design and build firm based in Portsmouth, Rhode Island that creates amazing high-end landscapes throughout coastal New England. From site planning to finished stonework and plantings, we design, build, and maintain spaces that feel timeless, intentional, and uniquely tailored to each property.

Our fine gardening team maintains and enhances some of the most beautiful properties and estates in coastal Rhode Island, with a focus on detail, plant health, and long-term garden design.

Your Day & Team Looks Like:

Your day begins at 6:45 AM at our Portsmouth office with a team meeting, followed by loading your vehicle with tools and materials for the day. During the spring and summer, you’ll work on fine gardening maintenance for estates throughout coastal Rhode Island, especially in Newport. If you love plants, you’ll love this work because every day brings something new and beautiful.

You’ll assist with planting, pruning, and detailed garden care, and may help with tree and shrub installations on larger construction projects. As one of the last teams on site, you’ll get to see entire landscapes come together from start to finish.

You’ll also be surrounded by experienced horticulturists and designers who love sharing their knowledge. During the spring and fall, you’ll support seasonal cleanups, focusing on pruning, deadheading, and pest management tasks that keep our gardens thriving.

You Are:

Someone who loves plants, trees, and spending time outdoors. You have a strong foundation in plant identification and understand the seasonal timing of key horticultural tasks, knowing when to prune, fertilize, deadhead, or divide perennials. You take pride in attention to detail and care deeply about maintaining healthy, well-balanced gardens.
