Job summary

Better.com is seeking a confident accounting professional to own financial reporting, including 10-Qs and 10-Ks, and to drive accurate monthly closes. You will collaborate with teams to deliver essential disclosures, schedules, and analyses for stakeholders, while mentoring junior staff in a fast-paced fintech environment.

The ideal candidate has strong US GAAP expertise, experience with Workiva, and prior public-company work.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and file quarterly 10-Qs and annual 10-Ks, including footnotes and MD&A.
• Process monthly financial reporting for regulatory and credit stakeholders.
• Lead month-end close on key corporate accounts and reconcile balances.
• Collaborate to deliver informative financial reports to stakeholders.
• Create and review journal entries and supporting schedules.
• Perform monthly balance sheet reconciliations and investigate variances.
• Support external audits and interact with auditors as needed.
• Educate team on financial practices and policies; provide ad hoc analyses.

Job description

Role & responsibilities

Work on quarterly 10-Qs and annual 10-Ks for SEC financial reporting as well as build out required disclosures and supporting schedules for footnotes, MD&A, and 8-K’s/earnings release

• Work on monthly financial reporting for our different regulatory and credit stakeholders
• Participate in month end closing by taking ownership of key corporate level accounts
• Collaborate with team members to provide useful and necessary financial reports
• Create and review journal entries in the GL along with preparing and reviewing supporting schedules
• Prepare and review monthly balance sheet reconciliations including investigating aged or unreconciled items
• Investigate and resolve both current and historical issues with our revenue transactions
• Implement accounting guidance for new accounting standard updates or initiatives
• Identify areas for improvement and drive process improvements
• Work with our external auditors to ensure the timely completion of reviews and audits
• Educate coworkers regarding financial practices, implications, and policies
• Provide ad hoc analysis support to business leaders and key partners for complex accounting questions
• Serve as a mentor and resource to more junior team members

Preferred candidate profile

Degree in accounting or finance

• 5-7 years of experience in an accounting firm or in-house at a company
• At least 1 year of management experience
• Experienced knowledge of U.S. GAAP
• Working Knowledge of Workiva
• Adaptable to multiple and frequent changes in business environment
• Proven expertise with Excel (combining large data sets, sumifs, index/match, vlookups, etc); familiarity with SQL a plus
• Experience working with Netsuite a plus
• Experience working at a public company
• Proven ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, without losing attention to detail
• Proactively looking to improve on processes; never satisfied with the status quo
• Stakeholder management skills
• Experience with industries such as financial technology, mortgage banking, or lending a plus.
