Job summary

The University of Utah is seeking a Financial Reporting Analyst III to support month-end and year-end close, prepare annual financial statements, and implement accounting and reporting initiatives in partnership with the Financial Reporting & Accounting team.

The role requires GASB expertise, strong analytical judgment, and collaboration across departments to ensure accurate, timely reporting and compliance with policies.

Qualifications

• Requires a bachelor's (or equivalency) + 6 years or a master's (or equivalency) + 4 years of directly related work experience.
• Experience applying GASB pronouncements and financial reporting.
• Strong Excel skills including pivot tables, lookups, formulas, data validation, and analysis of large data sets.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the preparation of annual financial statements and other required monthly and quarterly financial reports.
• Participate in the implementation and ongoing application of GASB pronouncements.
• Support monthly and year-end close processes by ensuring assigned accounting activities are completed accurately and on schedule.
• Partner with departments to resolve accounting questions, improve transaction accuracy, and provide guidance on appropriate accounting treatment.
• Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, strengthen internal controls, reduce manual work, and improve consistency.
• Support the setup, maintenance, and integrity of the chart of accounts, chart fields, and general ledger structure.
• Contribute to responses to external auditor inquiries in a timely and accurate manner.

Financial Reporting Analyst III

Job Summary

This position plays a key role in supporting the University\'s financial reporting and accounting functions, including month-end and year-end close activities, preparation of annual financial statements, and implementation of accounting and reporting initiatives. Working closely with the Associate Director of Financial Reporting & Accounting and the Financial Reporting Manager, the position assists in preparing annual financial reports for component units, and the University\'s consolidated financial statements, while ensuring the accuracy, completeness, and compliance of financial information.

The position gathers, analyzes, and reconciles financial data; prepares monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports; and supports responses to audit requests and inquiries related to annual financial statement audits. The incumbent contributes to the implementation and ongoing application of Government Accounting Standards Board (GASB) pronouncements, assists with accounting research, and supports system implementation and process improvement initiatives designed to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of financial reporting operations.

The ideal candidate is a strong technical accountant with a thorough understanding of GASB standards. This role requires sound professional judgment, strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, and the ability to identify, evaluate, and resolve complex accounting issues. Success in this position depends on the ability to collaborate effectively with departments, colleges, and component units across the University to ensure financial transactions and reporting are accurate, timely, and compliant with applicable accounting standards, regulations, and University policies.

Minimum Qualifications

EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor's degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).

Financial Reporting Analyst, III: Requires a bachelor's (or equivalency) + 6 years or a master's (or equivalency) + 4 years of directly related work experience.

Preferences

• Experience assisting in the preparation and/or review of financial statements.
• Understanding GASB rules and guidelines.
• Candidates who are CPA‑eligible, per the State of Utah Division of Occupational Licensing rules, and are willing to sit for the exams.
• Strong Excel skills, including pivot tables, lookups, formulas, data validation, and analysis of large data sets.
