Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) Manager

Job Summary: The FP&A Manager leads the organization’s financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis functions across the entities, programs, and service lines of NorthStar Care Community (NSCC). Partnering with the CFO and operational leaders, the Manager translates financial and operational data into insight that guides growth, margin, and operating decisions. This role requires advanced analytical and modeling skills, the ability to lead processes and influence without authority, and a deep understanding of health care finance, reimbursement, and non-profit financial practices.

Essential Functions:

  • Leads the annual operating and capital budget process across all NorthStar Care Community entities, programs, and departments in partnership with the AVP Finance, CFO, and Leadership Council.
  • Owns the rolling forecast and the long-range financial plan, including census/volume, payer mix, reimbursement models, staffing, and capital assumptions by service line and entity.
  • Develops and maintains complex financial models supporting growth and strategic decisions, including new service lines, affiliations, joint ventures, and acquisitions.
  • Collaborates with the Finance Team on monthly financial reporting.
  • Owns the shared/corporate expense allocation methodology across departments, programs, and entities within the financial system and the consolidated financial statements.
  • Directs the variance analysis and operating reviews with entity, program, and department leaders; identifies drivers and recommends corrective action.
  • Leads labor productivity, cost per patient day, and margin improvement analytics; partners with operations to size, track, and validate savings and growth initiatives.
  • Works with the NorthStar Solutions Group leaders on analyzing financial data to identify trends and opportunities for growth along with optimizing revenue and decreasing expenses; provides recommendations on contracted rates based on data and financial models.
  • Develops and maintains dashboards, KPIs, and reporting tools; partners with Finance and Information Technology on data integrity, definitions, and reporting automation so financial data is available and understood across the organization.
  • Prepares recurring and ad-hoc financial analysis and reports to support decision-making and operations, including materials for Leadership Council and Board reporting.
  • Responsible for the tracking and calculating of potential unrelated business income (UBI) tax related to services that are not covered under the organization’s non-profit tax-exempt status.
  • Continuously improves financial processes, systems, and planning tools to enhance efficiency and accuracy; directs projects as assigned and adjusts to changes in workload and schedules based on changing departmental and organizational priorities.
  • Leverages artificial intelligence, automation, and advanced analytics tools within approved systems to streamline recurring reporting, improve forecast accuracy, and expand self-service access to financial information across the organization.
  • Serves as the organization's subject-matter expert for financial planning and analysis, setting standards and practices for the function of planning, forecasting, and analytical methods; recruits, leads, and develops analyst staff if and when they are added to the function.
  • Models and promotes knowledge of palliative care and hospice philosophies and articulates and promotes NorthStar Care Community’s vision, mission, and values; upholds the organizational Code of Conduct, policies and procedures and all regulatory and legal requirements.
  • Models the NorthStar standards to care for every person, every time, 100% of the time.

Supervision: Reports to the Vice President/CFO. This position has no direct reports at this time; the FP&A Manager manages the FP&A function rather than staff.

Working Relationships:

Internal: Extensive and frequent contact with executive, administrative, and leadership staff across the organization both within designated areas of responsibility and with other individuals and departments within the organization.

External: Extensive contact with community agencies, partners, consultants, public agencies, and others, as well as Board, and Board Committee members as needed to ensure that service excellence is attained.

Qualifications:

  • Must possess a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or business administration or related field. MBA, CPA, CMA, or CHFP strongly preferred.
  • Five (5) years or more of progressive financial planning and analysis or related financial experience required, including experience leading budget cycles, cross-functional processes, or finance projects. Formal supervisory experience preferred.
  • Health care experience required; hospice, palliative, home-based, or post-acute experience within a multi-entity or consolidated reporting environment strongly preferred.
  • Advanced financial modeling, forecasting, and analytical skills required, including advanced Excel, budgeting/planning, and business intelligence reporting tools. Experience with, or demonstrated aptitude for, artificial intelligence and automation capabilities within financial planning, reporting, and business intelligence platforms, including AI-assisted forecasting, anomaly detection, and report and narrative generation; must exercise sound judgment in validating AI-generated output and in protecting confidential and protected health information.
  • Working knowledge of health care reimbursement required along with non-profit financial reporting.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex financial data into clear, actionable recommendations for clinical and operational leaders, executives, and Board members.
  • Must possess emotional intelligence and the ability to promote positive, constructive relationships with communication and collaboration at all levels.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to comfortably interact at all social levels and with colleagues from many different backgrounds, ethnic origins and skill levels required.

  • Must have reliable transportation to be able to travel and maintain the rigors of a busy schedule.
