Job summary

Boston Children’s Hospital in Boston, MA, is seeking a Financial Counselor to provide cost estimates and assist families with insurance coverage and financial assistance throughout the patient care journey.

The role supports pre-service financial clearance, helps with public health insurance applications, and ensures accurate billing information. A compassionate communicator with healthcare experience is preferred; bilingual skills are a plus. Hybrid schedule, M-F, 8–4:30, WRH 3 days/week.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Associate degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 6 months of experience, preferably in healthcare.
  • Experience in hospital operations, patient financial services, insurance verification, medical billing, or third-party billing preferred.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage sensitive financial conversations with empathy and professionalism.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Bilingual skills are a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Provide cost estimates for future services and support pre-service financial clearance activities.
  • Assist families with understanding insurance benefits, financial responsibilities, and available financial assistance programs.
  • Interview families to support enrollment in public health insurance programs (MassHealth, Medicaid, Medicare).
  • Resolve inquiries related to insurance eligibility, benefits, billing, and coverage.
  • Verify insurance eligibility and benefits through payer websites and direct communication with insurers.
  • Collaborate with clinical departments, case managers, insurance teams, and internal partners to ensure accurate records and billing processes.
  • Complete patient registration updates, insurance changes, estimates, and payment collection as needed.
  • Support charity care, Health Safety Net (HSN), and self-pay assistance processes.
  • Research and resolve complex financial inquiries maintaining confidentiality and empathy.
  • Identify and escalate family financial navigation concerns to leadership when additional support is needed.

Position Summary

The Financial Counselor plays an essential role in supporting patient families and hospital financial operations by providing timely financial guidance, cost estimates, and assistance navigating insurance coverage and financial assistance programs. This role supports pre-service financial clearance by helping families understand their financial responsibilities, assisting with public health insurance applications, resolving insurance-related questions, and ensuring accurate patient billing information. The Financial Counselor partners with families, insurance companies, and internal hospital teams to provide compassionate, accurate, and timely support throughout the patient care journey.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide cost estimates for future services and support pre-service financial clearance activities, including complex inpatient cases.
  • Assist patient families with understanding insurance benefits, financial responsibilities, and available financial assistance programs.
  • Interview families to support enrollment in public health insurance programs, including MassHealth, Medicaid, and Medicare.
  • Resolve patient inquiries related to insurance eligibility, benefits, billing concerns, and coverage issues through phone, in-person meetings, and written communication.
  • Verify insurance eligibility and benefits through payer websites, available technology platforms, and direct communication with insurance companies.
  • Collaborate with clinical departments, case managers, insurance teams, and internal partners to ensure accurate patient records and billing processes.
  • Complete patient registration updates, insurance changes, estimates, and payment collection activities as needed.
  • Support charity care, Health Safety Net (HSN), and self-pay assistance processes.
  • Research and resolve complex financial inquiries while maintaining confidentiality, professionalism, and empathy.
  • Identify and elevate family financial navigation concerns to leadership when additional support is needed.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Associate Degree preferred.
Experience
  • Minimum of 6 months of experience required, preferably in a healthcare setting.
  • Experience in hospital operations, patient financial services, insurance verification, medical billing, or third-party insurance billing preferred.
  • Strong customer service skills with the ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, and internal teams.
  • Ability to manage sensitive financial conversations with empathy and professionalism.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
