A growing indie games publisher with a portfolio of successful titles and 500K+ copies sold across PC and consoles is looking for its first Financial Controller. As the portfolio and the team grow, finance needs a dedicated owner. This is a hands-on, part-time role for someone who can take charge of day-to-day finance and build processes that will scale with the company.
About the publisher
The company publishes deep, systems-based games, including strategy and simulation titles, and has earned $10M+ on Steam to date. It is US-incorporated and run by a small, distributed, data-driven team. Alongside the core publishing business, it has an in-house studio working on its first original title and a small co-investment vehicle that lets investors fund larger projects together with the company.
The role
Until now, finance has been handled by external accountants and the founders themselves. You'll be the one person who owns the full operational finance cycle, from invoices to forecasts. That implies payments to developers and vendors, revenue-share calculations and a clean month-end close. Tax filings and the annual audit stay with external advisers, and you'll be their main point of contact. You'll report directly to the co-founders.
Core responsibilities
- Own the invoice process: intake, categorization, approval tracking, and timely payment
- Manage developer payments, revenue-share and recoupment calculations, and partner reporting
- Lead the month-end close, including bank reconciliation, payment verification and record keeping
- Maintain and improve cash-flow and financial forecasts
Additional responsibilities
- Develop management reporting, dashboards, financial controls and scalable accounting policies
- Maintain the bookkeeping system (Xero or similar)
- Coordinate with external accountants, tax advisers, auditors and investors
Requirements
- Hands-on accounting experience: accounts payable, accrual accounting, bank reconciliation and month-end close
- Working knowledge of publishing finance: platform and distributor statements, revenue shares, royalties and recoupment. Royalty experience from music, books or media is also welcome.
- Cash-flow forecasting and financial modeling, including variance analysis and spotting upcoming cash needs and risks
- Advanced Excel or Google Sheets for models, reconciliations and reporting
- Experience with Xero or a comparable platform, including building invoice workflows and approval controls
- Strong ownership and the ability to work independently
- Attention to detail, reliability and structured, process-oriented thinking
- Clear communication with internal and external partners
- Working English and a time zone within CET or EST ± 2 hours
Nice to have
- Experience with US C-Corps and international financial operations
- Experience building a finance function in a small, growing company
- Building finance dashboards and automating workflows
- Previous fractional or multi-client experience
What the company offers
- A flexible part-time schedule, fully remote
- Direct collaboration with the co-founders
- A high level of ownership and autonomy
- The opportunity to build and shape the finance function of a growing game publisher
- Transparent communication and a results-oriented culture
Hiring process
- A quick intro with Lera, the recruiter partnering on this search. It can be a brief call, or a few questions by message if you'd rather move straight to the next step.
- An interview with one of the co-founders, with case-based questions and a discussion of your past work.
- *Optional: A second interview with the other co-founder.
- Once you're in the process, you'll hear back within 3 business days at every stage.
