Job description

Our client is an established, privately held commercial services company serving the southeastern pennsylvania market. The organization has built a strong reputation through long-standing customer relationships, industry expertise, and a commitment to quality service.

With a solid foundation and an experienced leadership team, the company is seeking a senior-level financial professional who can strengthen its accounting and administrative functions while contributing to the continued success of the business.

The Opportunity

Our client is seeking an accomplished Controller to provide financial leadership and help drive operational and administrative improvements across the organization.

This is not a traditional Controller position focused exclusively on accounting and financial reporting.

The company is looking for an established financial leader who can manage the day-to-day financial responsibilities of a privately held business while identifying opportunities to improve processes, strengthen internal controls, increase efficiency, and provide leadership with meaningful financial and operational insight.

The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated track record of senior-level financial leadership, be comfortable rolling up their sleeves, and work closely with ownership and the leadership team in a smaller, entrepreneurial environment.

  • Oversee daily accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and financial reporting.
  • Manage monthly and year-end close processes, ensuring accurate and timely financial statements.
  • Oversee cash flow, banking relationships, reconciliations, and financial controls.
  • Lead budgeting, financial planning, and forecasting.
  • Coordinate with external accounting and tax professionals.
  • Provide ownership and leadership with clear, actionable information regarding the company's financial performance.
Business Operations & Process Improvement
  • Evaluate existing accounting and administrative processes, identifying opportunities to improve accuracy, efficiency, and effectiveness.
  • Develop practical reporting tools, dashboards, and performance metrics that help leadership make informed business decisions.
  • Work collaboratively with operations to improve visibility into business performance, costs, and profitability.
  • Identify opportunities for cost savings, improved systems, and more effective use of company resources.
  • Take ownership of improvement initiatives, from identifying an issue through implementing a solution.
Administrative & Organizational Leadership
  • Provide oversight and coordination of payroll, employee benefits administration, insurance, and related administrative functions.
  • Support HR administration, employee onboarding, and compliance-related activities.
  • Coordinate with outside providers and internal personnel to ensure administrative responsibilities are handled effectively.
  • Supervise and develop accounting and administrative support personnel.
  • Serve as a trusted resource to company leadership on financial, administrative, and operational matters.
Ideal Candidate Profile

We are seeking an accomplished Controller with a demonstrated history of senior-level financial leadership, strong accounting fundamentals, sound business judgment, and the ability to contribute beyond the traditional accounting function.

Qualifications & Experience
  • Significant experience serving as a Controller or in a comparable senior financial leadership position, with direct accountability for a company's financial operations.
  • Proven ability to independently lead the accounting and financial functions of a business, including financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, cash management, and internal controls.
  • Demonstrated success improving financial processes, systems, reporting, or operational efficiency.
  • Experience operating in a privately held, owner-operated, or similarly entrepreneurial business environment.
  • Strong understanding of how financial decisions affect broader business operations and profitability.
  • Comfortable remaining hands-on with accounting responsibilities while providing strategic guidance to company leadership.
  • Proven ability to communicate financial information and recommendations effectively to owners and senior executives.
  • Experience with accounting software and technology; familiarity with QuickBooks Online is beneficial.
  • Experience in construction, field services, or other project- or service-based businesses is advantageous but not required.
Personal Attributes
  • Experienced, confident financial leader who brings credibility and sound judgment.
  • Hands-on, resourceful, and willing to take ownership.
  • Proactive problem-solver who identifies opportunities rather than waiting for direction.
  • Comfortable balancing detailed accounting responsibilities with broader business priorities.
  • Collaborative, approachable, and able to build relationships throughout the organization.
  • Practical and adaptable, with an appreciation for the resources and priorities of a smaller business.
  • Committed to helping a successful, established company become even better.
Why Consider This Opportunity?

This position offers an experienced financial professional the opportunity to make a meaningful impact within an established, privately held business.

Rather than stepping into a narrowly defined accounting role, the incoming Controller will have the opportunity to evaluate existing practices, introduce improvements, and become an important contributor to the organization's continued success.

Working directly with ownership and senior leadership, this individual will have the opportunity to influence financial practices, improve operational efficiency, and help shape the company's future.

For an accomplished Controller who enjoys being close to the business, taking ownership, and seeing the results of their efforts, this position offers a compelling next step.

Compensation & Location

The position is located in southern delaware county, southwest of philadelphia, in the general vicinity of springfield and ridley park, with access to the i-95 and i-476 corridors. This is a full-time position that is available for immediate hire. A meaningful compensation package will be developed for the successful candidate that will include a base salary, performance bonus, automobile allowance, comprehensive benefits, and a 401k with company contributions. Relocation assistance is available and paid for by the company.
