We are working with an established, growing organization in the South Jersey area that is looking to add a hands-on Financial Controller to its leadership team. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced accounting professional who enjoys being involved in the day-to-day operations of a business, not simply managing the numbers from a distance. Our client is looking for someone who can take ownership of the accounting function, lead and develop a team, and work closely with senior leadership to improve financial reporting, processes, and overall business performance. The ideal candidate is someone who has spent time in a middle-market business, understands what it takes to operate in a fast-paced environment, and is equally comfortable reviewing financial statements, digging into account reconciliations, or working through an operational issue with department leaders. This is a highly visible position with an opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the organization.
Responsibilities
- Take ownership of the day-to-day accounting operations, including the monthly close, financial reporting, general ledger, and account reconciliations.
- Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, ensuring accuracy and compliance with GAAP.
- Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting team while remaining actively involved in the details when needed.
- Oversee key accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, fixed assets, and cash management.
- Partner with senior leadership on budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, and operational performance.
- Analyze financial results, identify trends, and provide meaningful insight into business performance, profitability, and cash flow.
- Improve existing accounting processes, strengthen internal controls, and identify opportunities for greater efficiency.
- Support external audits, financial reporting requirements, and other special projects.
- Work closely with operational leaders to understand the business and help drive better financial decisions.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.
Required Skills
- Progressive accounting experience, including experience in a Controller, Assistant Controller, Accounting Manager, or similar leadership role.
- Strong technical accounting skills and a solid understanding of GAAP, financial reporting, and the monthly close process.
- Experience working in a middle-market company where you've been directly involved in accounting operations.
- Demonstrated ability to manage and develop a team while maintaining a hands-on approach.
- Experience with budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, and process improvement.
- Strong Excel skills and experience working with accounting/ERP systems.
- Ability to communicate effectively with both financial and nonfinancial leadership.
- A practical, solutions-oriented approach with the ability to adapt to changing priorities.
Preferred Skills
- Experience in a multi-location or operationally complex business.
- Background in a privately held or investor-backed organization.
- Experience improving accounting processes, reporting, or financial systems.
