Job description

A top client is hiring an experienced Controller in Raleigh, NC. As the Controller, you own the close, the consolidation, the control environment, revenue recognition policy, and the accounting standards every division works to. You lead the corporate accounting team as well. Division leadership owns their results; you own the integrity of the numbers those results are built from.

Our client is growing quickly by acquisition, and every business they buy arrives with its own chart of accounts, its own close, and its own way of recording a job. Bringing each one onto a single standard is a large part of this role, and the impact builds with every deal. You will own the entire accounting function, at a fast pace. You will report to the Chief Financial Officer and work regularly with the rest of the executive team, which gives you visibility into how the business is run and a direct hand in where it goes next. For someone ready to advance their career alongside a growing company, this is the seat.

As the Controller, you are responsible for:

Close and reporting
  • Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close calendar and hold every entity to it, including

  • Own the consolidated financial statements and the accounting consolidation across all entities
  • Set the coding, reconciliation, and transaction-recording standards the Division Finance
  • Managers are held to
  • Own the balance sheet, corporate accruals, and intercompany eliminations
  • Own revenue recognition policy and the percentage-of-completion process, including how
  • estimates to complete are prepared, reviewed, and updated
  • Review and approve revenue recognition, job costing, over and under billings, and job-level
  • accruals prepared in the divisions
  • Train the Division Finance Managers on the percentage-of-completion process
Controls and audit
  • Own the internal controls framework, including segregation of duties and approval workflows
  • Write and maintain accounting policy, and enforce it consistently across entities
  • Coordinate the annual external audit and own the audit deliverables
  • Own the accounting elements of quality-of-earnings and diligence requests
Core process ownership
  • Own accounting execution across billing and receivables and across payables and vendor data
  • Drive process standardization and automation so the function scales with transaction volume
  • and each new acquisition
  • Own the accounting system configuration, chart of accounts, and master data standards
  • Own treasury reporting and the rolling cash forecast
Acquisition integration
  • Own the accounting integration of acquired businesses, including opening balance sheet and
  • chart of accounts mapping
  • Bring each acquired entity onto the close calendar and the platform reporting standard
  • Retire duplicate processes and systems that come with an acquisition
Metrics and reporting
  • Own the close, controls, and revenue recognition reporting for Finance leadership, and use it
  • to direct effort where it is needed most
Team leadership
  • Lead and develop the corporate accounting team
  • Set performance expectations, allocate workload, and ensure coverage across the close
  • Cross-train the team so no part of the close depends on a single person
  • Hold the Division Finance Managers to central standards without direct line authority

To be successful in the role, you must possess:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA, or equivalent depth in technical accounting
  • and external audit
  • You have owned a multi-entity close and consolidation, including entities that joined mid-
  • period
  • You have built or rebuilt accounting policy, controls, and segregation of duties
  • You have been the company-side owner of an external audit, or have worked in public

  • Leading an accounting automation effort or a software implementation, including ERP, that
