Confidential Search: Controller – Multi-Unit Retail Group (Southern California)

A successful and expanding retail and restaurant organization with over 75 locations throughout Southern California—spanning the Inland Empire, desert communities, and mountain regions—is discreetly recruiting an experienced Controller.

This key finance leadership position reports to the CFO and involves overseeing day-to-day accounting operations, financial reporting, and analysis in a fast-paced, multi-site hospitality environment. The role is focused on ensuring accurate financial statements, robust internal controls, and providing strategic insights to drive decision-making and long-term financial stability.

The position offers flexibility as hybrid or potentially remote, with our main office in the high desert area (accessible to the Inland Empire). We can also support arrangements in the greater Los Angeles/Pasadena vicinity, including a dedicated workspace if needed. Ideal for candidates based in or open to Southern California.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and month-end/year-end close processes.
• Prepare and review financial statements (income statement, balance sheet, cash flow) and management reports for accuracy, completeness, and GAAP compliance.
• Design and maintain internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure reliable financial data, including policy documentation.
• Coordinate external audits, support tax compliance, and ensure timely regulatory filings.
• Assist with budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, and deliver financial insights on trends, costs, and profitability.
• Monitor cash flow and liquidity; manage banking relationships, treasury functions, credit cards, and related activities as needed.
• Lead and develop the accounting team through hiring, coaching, process improvements, performance management, and professional development.
• Collaborate with leadership to offer financial guidance on investments, cost-saving measures, and strategic projects via detailed analysis.
• Own the accounting/ERP system, enhance processes for faster closings, and work cross-functionally on finance-related systems and initiatives.
• Establish best practices and efficiencies by streamlining accounting processes and related areas.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field; CPA and experience in restaurant accounting preferred.
• 7+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience, including prior roles as a Controller or senior accounting manager.
• Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting best practices.
• Proficiency with accounting software and advanced Excel skills; experience with Restaurant365 (R365) and QuickBooks preferred.
• Solid understanding of internal controls and audit processes.
• Excellent analytical, problem‑solving, and organizational skills.
• Strong communication abilities, with experience presenting financial information to non-financial stakeholders.
• Demonstrated leadership and team management/mentoring experience.
