Job summary

Financial Analyst

The Financial Analyst manages the complete financial lifecycle of oncology clinical trials. This university position handles both pre-award budgeting and post-award accounting. The role ensures compliance with federal, institutional, and industry sponsor regulations.

Pre-Award Duties:

  • Review coverage analyses and study protocols to ensure required procedures and schedules are included.
  • Build comprehensive budgets for industry, federal, and non-profit studies and amendments.
  • Negotiate financial terms with pharmaceutical sponsors to maximize cost recovery.
  • Collaborate with CCTO leaders, principal investigators and study staff to align budgets with clinical operational workflows.
  • Collaborate with medical center colleagues to ensure cost coverage and billing designations/compliance.
  • Review financial and payment terms in clinical trial agreements. Perform final study budget review/QC during contract execution phase.
  • Refine departmental processes to ensure compliance and efficiency and maximize cost recovery.
  • Coordinate document preparation, review and filing of clinical trial proposals, agreements, budgets, CAs, amendments, etc.

Post-Award Duties:

  • Establish unique fund accounts within the university financial system.
  • Upload executed study budgets into Clinical Trial Management System.
  • Prepare and submit study start-up invoices and all other sponsor invoices as defined in the clinical trials agreement. Track invoices and receivables.
  • Track patient enrollments to trigger accurate sponsor invoicing.
  • Process deposits on a weekly basis, reconcile monthly ledgers to ensure payments are received and recorded appropriately.
  • Process research-related invoices for patient care, laboratory, pharmacy, imaging services and others as required.
  • Conduct final closeouts of accounts upon study completion, including review of study activity and clinical trial agreement to ensure all costs have been invoiced and paid.
  • Monitor financial and other metrics associated with position, produce monthly reports for CCTO leadership.

Education: Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business or Healthcare Administration

Experience: 2+ years of financial analysis experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Possess strong analytical and mathematical skills, attention to details and organizational ability. Computer literate with working knowledge of software applications (word processing, spreadsheet, and database), especially of clinical trials budget spreadsheets.
  • Familiarity with Medicare Coverage Analysis (MCA) guidelines, medical billing codes.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Clinical Trial billing compliance and pre- and post-award activities. Understanding of the expectations and requirements of external and internal auditing.
  • Effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills. Demonstrate diplomacy, tact and professional demeanor. Ability to relate to diverse age and demographic backgrounds.

Computer Skills: Proficiency in all Microsoft Office suite of programs. Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel required.
