Overview

Under the supervision of the Yale School of Medicine (YSM) Associate Director of Financial Aid, this position is responsible for the loan creation and adjustment processes and the provision of debt management counseling to YSM MD and PA students. The Financial Aid Specialist is involved in the continuum of aid administration through the application process, need analysis, verification, awarding of aid based on established packaging parameters, use of professional judgment, and disbursement of aid. Student evaluations of the YSM Financial Aid Office have emphasized debt management counseling and financial literacy programming. The Financial Aid Specialist is responsible for providing one-on-one debt management counseling to MD, Physician Associate and Physician Assistant online students with educational debt. Occasional evening hours will be required. This is a hybrid opportunity with staff working in-person two to three days per week, based upon operational need.

Required Skills and Abilities
  • Four years of related work experience in financial aid and student counseling and a bachelor’s degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite of programs with a demonstrated ability in word processing, spreadsheets and current financial aid computer databases such as Banner.
  • Demonstrated high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to concentrate in a busy office environment, and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to review and interpret information provided on federal income tax returns.
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills. Ability to be discreet when dealing with confidential financial and personal family information.
Preferred Skills and Abilities
  • Experience with Banner financial aid system, ElmSelect and FSA website desired.
  • Graduate financial aid experience preferred.
Principal Responsibilities
  • Plans, coordinates and implements programs for a particular school or college in one or more of the following areas: financial aid, career services, and/or admissions.
  • Recommends short- and long-term administrative and department goals.
  • Determines student eligibility in one or more of the following areas: federal loan programs, school grants, job placement opportunities, and/or admissions.
  • Provides guidance, advice and counseling in one or more of the following areas: academic, admissions, career, and financial matters for students, faculty and prospective students.
  • Initiates, designs and implements operational systems to maintain and monitor student records and/or applicant records.
  • Reviews and approves all written material for publication or press release.
  • Organizes workshops and on- and off-campus recruitment events in one or more of the following areas: career services, admissions, and/or financial aid.
  • Supervises day-to-day operation of services; determines priorities and maintain workflow.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.
  • Required Education and Experience: Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field and four years of experience in a related area or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
