Salary: $75,000-$85,000, commensurate with experience
Location: Richmond, VA. This position is based out of BHC’s office at 2108 West Laburnum Ave, Richmond, VA and works a hybrid schedule.

Founded over 38 years ago, BHC’s mission is to change lives and transform communities through high quality, affordable housing with the ultimate goal of helping people realize their fullest potential. The organization budget is nearly $30 MM of which 80% is self-funded with over 75 employees located at their new office at West Laburnum Ave, Richmond, VA. The staff profile of BHC is C-Suite, Directors, Managers, to onsite Property Managers, Leasing Consultants, Maintenance Employees and Resident Services team members.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Financial Accountant leads bi-weekly payroll processing and payroll recordkeeping for Better Housing Coalition (BHC), Richmond Affordable Housing (RAH), and Construction, while also maintaining accurate accounting transaction records, accounts payable, and related financial documentation for assigned divisions and departments. This role serves as the primary point of contact for employee payroll questions and works closely with the Finance team and Human Resources to keep payroll, benefits deductions, and the general ledger accurate and in balance. We’re looking for a highly organized, detail-oriented professional who takes pride in getting the numbers right and enjoys being part of a collaborative team.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Payroll Processing & Administration
  • Lead bi-weekly payroll processing for BHC, RAH, and Construction, including review, approval, and submission.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for employee payroll questions, including hours, deductions, pay discrepancies, and W-2s.
  • Set up and maintain new hire, termination, and pay-rate change records within the payroll system.
  • Process wage garnishments, levies, and other court-ordered payroll deductions through the payroll system in compliance with applicable law.
  • Track and reconcile PTO, sick leave, and other accrual balances against payroll records
  • Coordinate with Human Resources on benefits enrollment changes that affect payroll deductions.
  • Maintain payroll compliance with wage and hour law, including FLSA classification recordkeeping, and maintain confidential payroll files.
Payroll Accounting & Reconciliation
  • Record payroll costs in Yardi via CSV journal entry import.
  • Review 403(b) contributions and import them into Yardi via CSV journal entry import.
  • Review benefit invoices and import them into Yardi.
  • Reconcile payroll deductions bi-weekly.
  • Reconcile payroll-related general ledger accounts monthly, including tax liabilities and benefits withholdings.
General Accounting & Accounts Payable
  • Maintain records of accounting transactions for BHC and related entities, assigned divisions, departments, and properties with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Record invoices and deposits and assist in preparing adjusting entries for assigned departments and divisions.
  • Receive and verify invoices, prepare payment vouchers, and maintain accurate accounts payable records.
  • Ensure accurate, complete, and timely payment of invoices to contractors, vendors, and suppliers for BHC, RAH, and related entities.
  • Perform monthly bank reconciliations for the BHC corporate account and property accounts.
  • Deposit donor, tenant, and other checks into the bank through the check scanner.
  • Assist in preparing balance sheets, profit and loss statements, and other financial reports.
Audit, Tax & Year-End Reporting
  • Review and ensure the accurate, complete, and timely filing of 1099/1096 forms for BHC and related entities.
  • Support payroll audits and year-end payroll reporting.
  • Assist with annual audit, tax return, and local audit work.
  • All other duties as assigned by management.
MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required; some college preferred.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in accounting and accounts payable or a related accounting field.
  • Prior payroll processing experience required.
MINIMUM SKILL REQUIREMENTS
  • Solid understanding of accounting principles, functions, and procedures, with the ability to perform intermediate math functions.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook, and accounting software.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, with a proven track record of maintaining high data accuracy while managing high-volume data entry and processing.
  • Ability to concentrate on intricate detail with frequent interruptions, work under pressure, and meet deadlines.
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and responsibilities.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships across departments.
  • Discretion in handling confidential payroll and financial information.
