Job summary

Thurston County Sheriff's Office seeks a Financial Operations Assistant to handle complex financial, accounting, and fiscal services. Responsibilities include posting to ledgers, payroll, A/P & A/R, encumbrances, and inmate medical billing, with budget support and bank reconciliations.

Independence and adherence to policies are expected, with potential lead duties for volunteers. Requirements include 21+, US citizenship or eligible status, a high school diploma or GED, and accounting coursework

Qualifications

• Must be at least 21 years of age.
• US citizen, lawful permanent resident, or DACA recipient and able to speak, read, and write English.
• High school diploma or GED is required.
• One year of college level accounting coursework and two years of accounting work experience.
• Acceptable scores on Civil Service skills examinations.
• Must meet Thurston County Civil Service Pre-Employment Screening Standards.
• Must meet Sheriff's Office Employment Standards and pass background checks, including polygraph/psychological eval if required.
• Ability to use a PC and related software to perform essential functions.
• Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
• Must handle cash and checks with accountability and integrity.

Responsibilities

• Post complex financial data to general ledgers.
• Assist in internal control system development and implementation.
• Perform specialized payroll per contracts; process and audit AP/AR and reimbursements.
• Maintain encumbrances and inmate medical billing; support budget prep.
• Reconcile and audit bank accounts; handle cash.
• Monitor and administer inmate accounting system; backup to Accounting Manager if needed.
