Job description

The Opportunity

Most internships start the day fetching coffee, end the day emptying trash bins, with a slew of tedious tasks in between that can make your eyes bleed. That’s not how it works at RJ O’Neil.

We know you possess capabilities, a hunger to learn, and a desire to contribute in a meaningful way. We craft our internship with those experiences in mind. Projects that leave a lasting impact on our business long after you’ve moved on. Experiences typically reserved for post- graduate, early-career professionals are put on your plate with a mentor to help you succeed.

Don’t take our word for it; see what our interns had to say for themselves at https://tinyurl.com/Alexa-Internship and https://tinyurl.com/Nico-Internship.

The RJ O’Neil Story

Established in 1926, RJ O’Neil isn’t just a mechanical contractor; we are a century-old landmark of reliability in Chicagoland. As a certified woman and minority-owned business, we’ve built our reputation on the "secret sauce" of our culture: treating people like family and providing value-driven service. We believe great work culture translates into successful projects and happy customers, which is why we encourage our team to make their personal lives a priority. When you join us, you’re not just an employee; you’re a steward of a 100-year legacy where an "honest wage for an honest day’s work" is our baseline, and your professional growth and development is our commitment.

The Package
Compensation

Our package leads the industry because great people are worth it.

  • Base Wage of $18 per hour with opportunity to grow over time
  • Periodic SPOT bonuses - because they’re a fun and rewarding way to chase and achieve short-term goals.
  • Annual incentive plan that targets an additional 3% of paid wages, with the opportunity to increase this over time (eligibility upon minimum 500 hours worked per year, not required)
Stability & Time Off

up to 1 week of unpaid time with prior approval and holidays off. We respect your "off" time because we know you give 100% when you're "on." A company with 100+ years of heritage and accelerating growth like never before.

The Culture

A supportive, professional, casual, and fun environment where you are treated as a vital team member and professional, not just a number, not just a helper. Mentorship and your development matter to us, so we invest in them.

Who You Are
Curious:

You want to understand how things work, why they contribute to success, and how things can be better. Your questions tend to lean toward the why and when, less about the how.

Resourceful:

You take ownership of your tasks & responsibilities. You’ve likely never done much of this work before; that’s why it’s an internship. But you’re hungry to learn, so you’ll lean on AI, YouTube videos, and help portals as part of your learning experience. You’ll lean on the CEO, CFO & COO to explain the why and the contribution to the company. They’ll lean on you to deliver results.

Flexible

As a small business, priorities and business needs evolve quickly. So your assignments & priorities may ebb & flow with them.

Reliable

You do what you say you’ll do. You’re on time for work, you meet deadlines, display consistent effort. You don’t pretend to know things you don’t. You learn to bring recommendations and solutions to problems, not just report problems.

Coachable

We’ll coach up front, but we’ll also coach every step of the way. You’ll always get feedback, and you have to be comfortable with that. It’s all directed toward better outcomes and a top-notch learning environment. It’s a balance that allows us to expose you to things that are seldom given to interns. Our part is to coach, yours is to be coachable - a fair trade.

Customer Focus:

E everything we do is for our customers' success - when they win, we win.
