Qualifications

Job description

The Michigan Medicine Chief of Financial Services (CFS) is the executive manager of centralized corporate functions including accounting, financial planning and analysis, reimbursement, financial systems and applications, and real estate and leases.The CFS supervises a team of senior directors who oversee each function, providing executive support, expertise, and strategic coordination. The CFS serves as a direct report, strategic advisor, and partner to the Michigan Medicine Chief Financial Officer and has jurisdiction across the entire clinical enterprise (currently including the academic medical center in Ann Arbor and the Regional Health Network in Lansing and Grand Rapids).

Responsibilities*

Strategic Leadership

Reports to the Michigan Medicine Chief Financial Officer (MM CFO) and is accountable to the Associate Chief Financial Officers (ACFOs), Vice Presidents of Finance (VPFs), the Chief of Managed Care and Contracting, the Chief Revenue Cycle Officer, and executive and senior leaders in clinical operations (e.g., the Chief Nursing and Operations Executive of University of Michigan Health, the President of the Regional Health Network, and hospital and business segment leaders).

Supports the University of Michigan Health (UM Health) Board of Directors Finance Committee and the UM Health Corporation Board Finance Committee.Establishes and maintains strong working relationships with the University Finance and Treasury Office and the Medical School Finance team.Also builds strong working relationships with the Clinical Science Department Chairs and Administrators.

Leads the development of the multi-year strategic financial framework and capital plan, and new-venture business plans, working closely with the Chief Strategy Officer and team.

Serves as a Finance Executive lead for the workflow and process design, build, test, and implementation of the enterprise resource planning systems (ERP), in cooperation with the central University.Ensures that ERP designs and functionalities meet the business imperatives and industry standards regarding accounting, financial planning and analysis, and long-range capital structures of a large and diverse clinical enterprise.

Serves as a strategic partner for the long-range planning of Michigan Medicine and the Medical School.

Maintains advanced knowledge of health care and financial management policies, trends, economics, and strategies.

Responsible for the financial planning and analysis operations of Michigan Medicine's clinical enterprises, including annual operating and capital budgeting, long-term financial and capital frameworks, business planning for new ventures, multivariate quantitative predictive modeling for existing and new operations, and other ad hoc analyses as necessary.

Responsible for the reimbursement operations of Michigan Medicine's clinical enterprises.Oversees the revenue recognition process, reimbursements tied to Medicare and Medicaid, and graduate medical education (GME) related payments and supplemental reimbursements.

Responsible for the financial systems operations of Michigan Medicine's clinical operations. Oversees the development and maintenance of business applications, budgeting systems, and reporting tools. Coordinates finance functions within the ERP. Manages the Vizient database for external performance benchmarking.

Responsible for the real estate, leasing, and brokerage services of Michigan Medicine's clinical enterprises. Oversees real estate purchases and sales, and lease negotiations and management.

Required Qualifications*

Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Accounting, Finance, Financial Systems, or a related field.

5 years of experience in senior management roles.

15 years of experience in financial analytics, data management, health care, and finance-related technology.

High-level knowledge of accounting and finance principles.

Experience with operating and capital budgeting, long-range financial planning, and business plan pro forma development.

Experience with large-scale financial system implementations.

Demonstrates relationship building, mentoring, coaching, collaborating, and team building.

Organizational skills with an ability to manage competing demands.

A technical background enabling the provision of credible leadership and evaluation of complex project risks and issues.

Desired Qualifications*

Graduate-level degree in Business, Informatics, Quantitative Analysis, Accounting, Finance, Information Systems, or a related field.

Excellent oral and written communication skills and experience interacting with both finance and information technology individuals at all levels, including executives.

Success in building collaborative relationships focused on high performance and successful outcomes.

Creativity in problem-solving focused on details while achieving the big-picture objective.
