CHOOSE 180 is a Washington-based nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming systems of injustice and supporting youth toward their greatest potential. We seek a Finance Director to lead financial operations, ensure fiscal sustainability, and align practices with our mission and long-term vision.

The Finance Director will oversee budgeting, forecasting, accounting, reporting, compliance, grants management, and financial analysis, serving as a strategic partner to the CEO and leadership team

Qualifications

• 6+ years of nonprofit accounting and finance experience with direct responsibility.
• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or related field (or equivalent).
• Experience with financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and analysis.
• Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and nonprofit accounting (ASC 958, ASC 606).
• Experience managing restricted and unrestricted funding and nonprofit grants and contracts.
• Knowledge of internal controls, financial compliance, and risk management.
• Proficiency with Excel and accounting systems; QuickBooks Online preferred.
• Ability to translate financial information for non-financial audiences.
• Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead the annual budgeting process with CEO and department leaders.
• Develop forecasts, models, and scenario analyses to support planning.
• Monitor performance vs budget and forecast; identify risks.
• Provide financial analysis to CEO and leadership on priorities.
• Monitor cash flow and liquidity; address concerns.
• Lead monthly Finance Committee meetings with reports.
• Oversee day-to-day accounting: GL, reconciliations, journals.
• Ensure timely financial statements (P&L, balance sheet, cash flow).
• Ensure compliance with US GAAP and nonprofit standards (ASC 958/606).
• Maintain internal controls and improve processes.
• Develop regular reports and dashboards.
• Lead budget-to-actual analyses with department leaders.
• Translate financial data for non-financial leaders.
• Collaborate with external accountants and auditors.
• Oversee grants/contracts financial management: budgets, invoicing, reporting.
• Track restricted vs unrestricted funds; align with funder rules.
• Coordinate audits and Form 990; external engagements.

Position Overview

The Finance Director provides leadership and oversight of CHOOSE 180’s financial operations, ensuring strong financial systems, accurate reporting, sound internal controls, and responsible stewardship of organizational resources.The Finance Director leads budgeting, forecasting, accounting operations, financial reporting, compliance, grant and contract financial management, and financial analysis. This role serves as a key financial partner to the CEO, and organizational leadership, translating financial information into clear insights that support sound decision-making, sustainability, and programmatic impact.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the annual organizational budgeting process in partnership with the CEO and department leaders.
• Develop and maintain financial forecasts, models, and scenario analyses to support organizational planning and decision-making.
• Monitor financial performance against budget and forecast, identify trends and risks, and recommend solutions.
• Provide the CEO and leadership team with clear financial analysis and recommendations related to organizational priorities, staffing, programs, funding, and sustainability.
• Monitor cash flow and organizational liquidity and proactively identify financial concerns.
• Participate in, and as needed lead the monthly Finance Committee meetings, preparing financial reports for the Committee to review.

Accounting & Financial Operations

• Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger management, reconciliations, journal entries, accounts payable/receivable, and month-end and year-end close.
• Ensure accurate and timely preparation of financial statements, including P&L, balance sheet, cash-flow reporting, and management reports.
• Ensure financial records comply with U.S. GAAP and applicable nonprofit accounting standards, including ASC 958 and ASC 606.
• Maintain and strengthen financial systems, processes, policies, and internal controls.
• Identify opportunities to improve financial efficiency, accuracy, automation, and accountability.
• Develop regular financial reports and analysis for the CEO, leadership team, department leaders, and Board as appropriate.
• Lead budget-to-actual analysis and partner with department leaders to understand and address significant variances.
• Translate financial information into clear, accessible insights for non-financial leaders.
• Develop financial dashboards and other tools that support organizational decision-making.

Contracts & Compliance

• Oversee the financial management of grants and contracts, including preparing budgets, tracking, invoicing, reporting, and compliance.
• Ensure restricted and unrestricted funds are appropriately tracked and expenditures align with funder requirements.
• Partner with program, grants, contracts, and development teams to ensure financial accountability and accurate reporting.
• Maintain compliance with applicable federal, state, local, and funder requirements, including the Uniform Guidance for Federal Awards when applicable.
• Coordinate annual audits, financial reviews, Form 990 preparation, and other external financial engagements.
• Regularly evaluate internal controls and identify and elevate financial risks, compliance concerns, or potential misuse of funds.

Organizational Partnership & Leadership

• Serve as a trusted financial partner to the CEO and organizational leadership.
• Partner with department leaders to develop, monitor, and manage budgets.
• Build financial literacy across the organization by providing guidance and training on budgeting, financial reporting, and fiscal responsibility.
• Provide leadership and direction to finance staff and/or contracted finance professionals as assigned.
• Manage relationships with external accountants, auditors, banking institutions, financial consultants, and other finance-related vendors.
• Participate in organizational planning, leadership meetings, and cross-functional initiatives where financial expertise is needed.
• Lead according to the mission, vision, and values of CHOOSE 180.

Required Qualifications

The following experience is required. Candidates who do not demonstrate this experience will not meet the minimum qualifications for the position.

• 6+ years of demonstrated professional experience in nonprofit accounting and finance, including direct responsibility for nonprofit financial operations.
• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Demonstrated experience with financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis.
• Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and nonprofit accounting, including ASC 958 and ASC 606.
• Experience managing restricted and unrestricted funding and nonprofit grants and contracts.
• Demonstrated knowledge of internal controls, financial compliance, and risk management.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and accounting/financial management systems; QuickBooks Online experience preferred.
• Ability to translate financial information into clear recommendations for non-financial audiences.
• Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
• High level of accountability, discretion, accuracy, and integrity.

Preferred Qualifications

• CPA, CMA, MBA, or progress toward a relevant professional certification.
• Experience with government-funded programs, contracts, or grants.
• Working knowledge of the Uniform Guidance for Federal Awards.
• Experience improving financial systems, processes, and internal controls.
• Experience working in youth justice, restorative justice, violence prevention, youth development, or other community-based systems serving historically marginalized communities.
• Experience working with or in the criminal legal system.
• Familiarity with emerging technologies, including AI, that improve financial analysis and operations.

Working Conditions

This position is primarily office-based with flexibility consistent with CHOOSE 180’s organizational practices. Occasional evening or weekend meetings or organizational events may be required. Relocation assistance will not be provided. While this position is flexible for remote work, candidates must reside in Washington State to be considered for the position.

The pay range for this position is $90,000 - $100,000/annually DOE
