Job summary

The New Group is seeking a Finance Associate in New York to support day-to-day finance operations and ensure compliance with internal controls. This full-time, non-exempt role offers a salary of $55,000–$60,000 and a hybrid work arrangement in Times Square.

You will handle general ledger tasks, A/R/A/P, revenue reconciliation, payroll, budgeting support, and audit readiness, collaborating with departments to advance the organization’s mission.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • General Ledger & Nonprofit GAAP Compliance: maintain ledger and perform monthly closings.
  • Accounts Receivable: issue invoices and monitor receivables; coordinate with Development and grant teams.
  • Accounts Payable: process bills, monitor cash outflow, and reconcile credit cards and petty cash; collect W-9s and 1099s.
  • Revenue Reconciliation: align box office and subscription revenue with operations.
  • Payroll & HRIS: process weekly payroll, onboarding/offboarding, HRIS maintenance, quarterly filings.
  • Budgets & Financial Reporting: support budget development and board reports.
  • Audit & Compliance: lead preparation for annual financial audit and liaise with auditors.
  • Financial Systems: administer accounting platforms.
  • Reporting & Compliance: prepare reports for audits and regulatory filings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job description

Reporting to the Managing Director, the Finance Associate supports the day-to-day management of the finance function while coordinating across departments to maintain compliance with internal financial controls. Bringing a foundational knowledge of Nonprofit GAAP accounting and eager to learn more, the ideal candidate desires to be a collaborative partner working directly with colleagues to achieve The New Group’s mission. This is a full-time, non-exempt position with an annual salary of $55,000-$60,000 .

Founded in 1995, The New Group is an award-winning, artist-driven company with a commitment to developing and producing powerful, contemporary theater. Alongside its season of new productions, the organization’s New Group/New Works program develops original plays and musicals by emerging and established writers. The New Group also offers the YTT college access program and an acting conservatory in partnership with LIU Brooklyn.

Key Responsibilities
  • General Ledger & Nonprofit GAAP Compliance: Maintain the general ledger in accordance with Nonprofit GAAP principles while adhering to internal financial controls. Reconcile accounts and complete monthly closing activities on a timely basis.
  • Accounts Receivable (A/R): Issue/track invoices and monitor receivables due. Partner closely with Development (charitable contributions/grants) and (co-production/enhancement funds) teams to track and correctly recognize revenue, and archive transaction backup.
  • Accounts Payable (A/P): Process weekly bills, monitor cash outflow, and track upcoming payables. Reconcile credit cards and petty cash; collect required transaction backups. Collect W-9s and issue annual 1099s.
  • Revenue Reconciliation: Partner with the Spektrix Data Operations Manager to reconcile box office and subscription revenues. Realize earned income and maintain audit-ready records.
  • Payroll & HRIS: Process weekly payroll with Department Heads and record transactions in the GL. Manage payroll onboarding/offboarding of all employees. Maintain the HRIS system (tax designations, PTO balances, compliance workflows, and deductions). Review quarterly payroll filings and annual W-2s for accuracy.
  • Budgets & Financial Reporting: Support annual budget development and management. Prepare budget reports for board/committee meetings and institutional funders.
  • Audit & Compliance: Lead preparation for the annual financial audit, compile testing materials, and liaise with external auditors.
  • Financial Systems: Serve as a key administrator and user for all financial and accounting platforms.
  • Reporting & Compliance: Prepare reports for insurance audits and regulatory filings.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Core Competencies
  • Accounting Knowledge: Working knowledge of Nonprofit GAAP accounting principles. The New Group is open to sponsoring additional training in this area for an otherwise qualified candidate with solid bookkeeping experience and a demonstrated learning mindset.
  • Relevant Experience: Minimum 1-2 years full-cycle bookkeeping & payroll, preferably in a nonprofit and/or theater environment. Experience supporting the annual financial audit.

  • Key Competencies: Exceptional organization of priorities and processes, high standard for accuracy, thoroughness, and error-checking, discretion handling confidential data, and clear communication skills.
  • Technical Knowledge:
    • Microsoft Excel
    • QuickBooks Online
    • Strong foundational knowledge or ability to quickly adapt to: Paylocity, Google Workspace & new cloud-based finance applications
  • Physical Requirements: This is a mostly sedentary role requiring extended periods working at a computer. Some bending, reaching, and light lifting is required for accessing and managing paper files and printers.

Office hours are 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Monday through Friday. The New Group practices a hybrid remote/in-person model with staff currently expected to work in our Times Square offices Tuesdays/ Wednesdays/ Thursdays and the option to work remotely on Mondays/Fridays. During the first few months of employment, additional in-office days may be required for onboarding.

Compensation

This is a full-time, non-exempt position with an annual salary of $55,000-$60,000 . The regular workweek is 40 hours per week. Hours outside of the regular schedule may be expected in times of peak activity, such as the annual Gala (currently April), quarterly board meetings, and the annual financial audit (typically November). This role is subject to overtime pay, and hours worked over 40 per week will be paid at 1.5 times the hourly rate.

The total compensation package includes health, dental, and vision insurance, with 100% of base plan premiums paid by The New Group.

The New Group offers generous paid time off, including accrued vacation (starting at 10 days annually) and accrued sick and safe leave (up to 40 hours per year), alongside up to 3 days of personal leave. In addition to 10 paid annual holidays, we also set aside extra paid time off by closing our offices throughout the year as production permits, plus a seasonal ‘Summer Fridays’ schedule
