Job summary

Hawaii Technology Academy (HTA) is a tuition-free, WASC-accredited public charter school serving 2,400+ students across six campuses. The Finance/Accounting Manager reports to the CFO, oversees accounting operations and budgeting, and leads 2–3 finance staff to support HTA’s mission and growth.

Responsibilities include financial reporting, internal controls, audits, and compliance with GAAP and state rules, plus collaboration on strategic planning and cross-departmental initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required.
  • 7+ years in senior finance/controller-level roles in accounting, budgeting, and financial planning.
  • 5+ years supervisory/leadership experience.
  • Proficiency in Enterprise QuickBooks and advanced Excel.
  • Strong data analysis and compliance capabilities with regulatory/state agencies.

  • Participate in strategic financial planning to ensure long-term stability and represent HTA with key stakeholders.
  • Supervise 2–3 employees; coach, set expectations, and manage performance with HR/CFO.
  • Oversee payroll, billing, AR/AP, GL, fixed assets, cost/revenue/inventory accounting, cash management, and treasury.
  • Recruit, train, and develop Finance staff; align goals with organizational priorities.
  • Prepare and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements to leadership and the Board.
  • Collaborate on annual operating/capital budgets; monitor variances and forecasts.
  • Develop and maintain internal controls, policies, and system configurations.
  • Coordinate with auditors and ensure GAAP, Hawaii statutes, and GASB standards.

Position Title: Finance/Accounting Manager

Employment Type: Full Time | FLSA Status: Exempt

Salary Range: $105,000 - $125,000 (commensurate with qualifications/experience)

Reports to: CFO | Direct Reports: 2-3 Finance/Accounting employees

Start Date: Immediate upon selection and completion of required onboarding processes.

Hawaii Technology Academy (HTA) is a tuition-free, WASC-accredited public charter school founded in 2008. As Hawaii’s largest statewide public charter school, HTA serves over 2,400 K-12 students across six campuses on Hawaii Island, Kauai, Maui, and Oahu.

Position Overview

Reporting to the CFO, the Finance/Accounting Manager oversees accounting operations, budgeting, financial reporting, internal controls, compliance, audits, and financial initiatives supporting HTA’s mission. As a key member of the Finance & Administration team, this role requires technical expertise, cross-training across departmental functions for operational continuity, people leadership, and the capacity for growth into broader responsibilities.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Leadership & Strategy: Participate in strategic financial planning to ensure long-term stability. Maintain professional relationships with the charter school community, State, and Charter Commission, representing HTA in professional organizations.
  • Team Development: Supervise 2–3 employees. Assign work, set expectations, provide coaching and feedback, manage performance concerns with HR/CFO, build cross-training capacity, and foster an accountable, service-oriented culture.
  • Accounting & Finance Operations: Oversee payroll, billing, AR/AP, general ledger, fixed assets, cost/revenue/inventory accounting, cash management, and banking/treasury functions. Work with risk management and insurance carriers on claims.
  • Departmental Management: Recruit, train, mentor, evaluate, and develop Finance staff while establishing goals aligned with organizational priorities.
  • Financial Reporting: Prepare and present accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements to leadership and the Board of Directors. Gather and report data to national associations as needed.
  • Budgeting & Forecasting: Collaborate with leadership to build annual operating/capital budgets. Monitor monthly variances, trends, and forecasts to provide fiscal stability recommendations.
  • Internal Controls: Develop and maintain financial reporting controls, processes, and policies. Optimize financial, payroll, and information systems configurations.
  • Compliance & Audits: Partner with Charter Commission-approved auditors. Ensure adherence to GAAP, Hawaii Revised Statutes, IRS charter rules, grants/contracts, governmental reporting, and GASB standards (including GASB 87, 96, and 101).
Qualifications
  • Required:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
  • 7 years of senior finance/controller-level experience in accounting, budgeting, and financial planning.
  • 5 years of supervisory/leadership experience (performance management, coaching, conflict resolution).
  • Proficiency in Enterprise QuickBooks (mandatory) and advanced Excel (mandatory); familiarity with financial/accounting software and MS Office.
  • Strong data analysis and compliance capabilities with regulatory/state agencies.
  • Valid driver’s license, insurance, and ability to travel off-island as needed.
  • Proven track record of taking on increasing financial leadership.
  • Strong business judgment connecting financial analysis to organizational priorities.
  • Ability to translate complex financial concepts for non-financial stakeholders.
  • Preferred:
  • CPA or CMA certification; Master’s degree (MBA or Accounting).
  • Background in audit, nonprofit accounting, Department of Education, or educational institutions.
Physical & Employment Conditions
  • Physical Requirements: Prolonged computer/screen use, reviewing financial documents, and electronic/phone/Zoom communication. Ability to lift 10–15 lbs.
