Job description

Overview

Join to apply for the Chief Operating Officer (COO) role at Hawai‘i Technology Academy (HTA).

Location: Statewide (O‘ahu preferred) | Type: Full-Time, 12mo | Classification: Excluded Managerial (At-Will) | Requisition: REQ-SY2627-SR-001

Doing School Differently. Doing School Better.

Hawai‘i Technology Academy (HTA) is a rapidly growing, statewide blended-learning public charter school. As we scale to meet the increasingly complex needs of our students and staff, we are seeking a strategic, mission-driven Chief Operating Officer (COO) to translate our vision into organizational excellence.

The Role

As a key member of the Executive Leadership Team reporting to the Executive Director, the COO is the architect of HTA’s non-academic operations. You will foster coordination across finance, facilities, legal, and technology departments to ensure our statewide model thrives sustainably.

This is more than an operational role; you will be a sounding board and confidant for the Executive Director and a key liaison for our governing board and external partners.

Key Responsibilities
  • Financial Stewardship: Lead financial forecasting, capital planning, and fiscal integrity for a $30M+ budget.
  • Strategic Infrastructure: Oversee facilities planning, lease negotiations, and expansion projects across the islands.
  • Digital Leadership: Align HTA’s IT and software development functions with our educational mission.
  • External Relations: Steward relationships with lenders, donors, regulators, and affiliated nonprofits (Friends of HTA, HTA Campus Development Corp).
  • Governance & Compliance: Manage interactions with the Charter Commission and oversee outside legal counsel.
Who You Are

You are an experienced financial or operations executive—or a seasoned educator with charter experience—who blends analytical rigor with collaborative leadership. You thrive in environments where processes must evolve to match growth.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High-level operational/financial experience in an organization of similar scale (~250 employees, $30M budget).
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Public Administration, Finance, or a related field.
  • Must be (or become) a Hawai‘i resident (No relocation allowance provided).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in a related field.
  • Experience within the Hawai‘i charter school landscape or educational institutions.
Compensation & Benefits
  • Salary Range: $125,000 – $165,000 annually (Commensurate with experience).
  • Benefits: Full State of Hawai‘i health package (Medical, Dental, Vision), State Retirement (ERS), Flex Spending, 403B, and paid leave.
Location & Travel

While HTA’s administrative offices are in Waipahu (O‘ahu), the COO has flexibility in office location but must be available for regular in-person meetings at various campuses. Expect day trips to neighbor islands 1–3 times per month, with occasional overnight and continental travel.

Start Date

HTA is looking for the right fit. We are open to an Immediate start, or waiting for the right candidate to fulfill current commitments through June 2026 or June 2027.

How to Apply

Interested candidates can apply directly through HTA's Application Portal/Link.
