La Jolla Country Day School seeks a thoughtful English Educator to teach fifth grade in our Middle School, supporting students as they build independence, strengthen literacy skills, and grow as readers, writers, and critical thinkers.

This long-term substitute assignment runs from mid-December 2026 through late June 2027, with responsibilities to deliver differentiated instruction, guide literature discussions, and foster a supportive classroom culture.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required; master’s in English, education, literacy, or related field preferred.
• Experience teaching elementary or middle school English, literacy, or language arts.
• Knowledge of literacy development, reading comprehension, and writing instruction.
• Familiarity with Science of Reading and research-informed literacy practices.
• Proficiency with Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, and LMS such as Canvas or Blackbaud.

Responsibilities

• Teach fifth grade English, building reading comprehension and writing skills.
• Deliver differentiated instruction informed by literacy practices including Science of Reading.
• Cover vocabulary, morphology, grammar, and writing through explicit instruction.
• Guide students in analyzing literature and developing textual evidence.
• Provide opportunities for analytical and creative writing and discussions.
• Collaborate with English department to implement curriculum and align practices.
• Use assessment data to guide instruction and monitor progress.
• Serve as advisor to a group of students and communicate with families.
