Location: Tuscaloosa, AL 35401, USA

The Field Technician is responsible for performing service and repair work on equipment both independently and as part of a team. This role requires the ability to accurately evaluate, troubleshoot, and repair earthmoving equipment in the field and in shop environments. The Field Technician must successfully complete on‑the‑job training, classroom instruction, and e‑learning. Successful candidates demonstrate initiative, strong teamwork, commitment to customer service, and dedication to providing efficient, effective solutions.

Advancement in Technician classification is based on attitude, skill development, and overall job performance.

Responsibilities
  • Adhere to all applicable safety standards and procedures.
  • Plan and perform minor repairs using correct tools and procedures.
  • Conduct removal, installation, disassembly, reassembly, and minor adjustments on engines, hydraulics, transmissions, and electrical components.
  • Perform preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and troubleshooting.
  • Use service information systems properly.
  • Order and return parts for assigned jobs in a timely manner.
  • Test and adjust components for optimal performance.
  • Work independently in the field as required.
  • Maintain proper attendance and professional conduct.
  • Maintain a productive work environment by acting and communicating in a manner that upholds the values of the Thompson Tractor brand.
  • Build positive relationships with customers, clients, vendors, coworkers, and management.
  • Have a valid driver’s license to be eligible for hire.

Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience: Minimum of one year of mechanical repair experience or equivalent technical education. Experience using personal computers and basic typing required. MVR required. Med Card and CDL preferred.

Skills & Competencies: Intermediate engine, transmission, hydraulic, and electrical diagnostic and repair skills. Written and verbal communication skills required. Basic computer skills required. Ability to speak, listen, read, write, and type effectively.

Job Training: Area specific technical training, OSHA and MSHA required training, vendor technical sites (Infocast, Liftnet, SIMSi, etc.).

Working Conditions
  • Work typically performed in a service department shop or on customer job sites.
  • Exposure to physical risk and all-weather conditions; standing on hard surfaces for extended periods often required.
