Job summary

Thompson Tractor Company in Alabama is seeking a Field Technician to service and repair earthmoving equipment in the field or in shop environments. You will troubleshoot, diagnose, and perform repairs with a focus on safety and customer service.

This role requires on‑the‑job training, classroom instruction, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team. A valid driver’s license is required, and CDL preferred; MVR is required.

Qualifications

• Minimum 1 year of mechanical repair experience or an equivalent combination of experience and technical training.
• Experience using personal computers and basic typing skills.
• MVR required; CDL preferred.

Job description

The Field Technician is responsible for performing service and repair work on equipment while working both independently and as part of a team. This role requires the ability to accurately evaluate, troubleshoot, and repair earthmoving equipment in the field and in shop environments. The Field Technician must successfully complete on‑the‑job training, classroom instruction, and e‑learning. Successful candidates demonstrate initiative, strong teamwork, a commitment to customer service, and a dedication to providing efficient, effective solutions.

Essential Responsibilities & Expectations

• Adheres to and follows all applicable and required safety standards and procedures.
• Plans and performs minor repairs using correct tools and procedures.
• Performs the following tasks on engines, hydraulics, transmissions, and electrical components: remove and install; disassemble and reassemble; minor adjustments as needed for service.
• Perform preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and troubleshooting.
• Demonstrates proper use of service information systems.
• Orders and returns parts for assigned jobs in a timely manner.
• Test and adjust components for optimal performance.
• Works independently in the field as required.
• Must have a valid driver’s license to be eligible for hire.

Qualifications

Education

• High school diploma or the equivalent.

Experience

• A minimum of one (1) year's work experience involving mechanical repairs or a combination of relevant experience and equivalent technical education required.
• Experience using personal computers and basic typing skills required.
• Med Card and CDL preferred.
• MVR (required).

Skills and Competencies

• Intermediate engine, transmission, hydraulic, and electrical diagnostic, and repair skills.
• Written and verbal communication skills required.
• Basic computer skills required.

Job Training

• Area specific technical training.
• OSHA and MSHA required training.
• Vendor technical sites (Infocast, Liftnet, SIMSi, etc.).
