Job summary

Thompson Tractor is seeking a Field Technician to service and repair earthmoving equipment in the field and shop environments. The role requires troubleshooting, customer service, and completion of on‑the‑job training and OSHA/MSHA training.

Advancement is based on attitude, skill development, and performance. Responsibilities include diagnosing engines, hydraulics, transmissions, and electrical systems, performing repairs, ordering parts, and ensuring safe, efficient operation.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or the equivalent.
  • Minimum 1 year of mechanical repair experience or related technical education.
  • Experience using personal computers and basic typing skills.
  • Med Card and CDL preferred; MVR required.

Responsibilities

  • Plans and performs minor repairs using correct tools and procedures.
  • Repair engines, hydraulics, transmissions, and electrical components: remove and install; disassemble and reassemble.
  • Perform preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and troubleshooting.
  • Operate in field and shop environments; work independently.
  • Test and adjust components for optimal performance.
  • Order and return parts for assigned jobs promptly.
  • Maintain safety standards and positive customer relations.

Job description

The Field Technician is responsible for performing service and repair work on equipment while working both independently and as part of a team. This role requires the ability to accurately evaluate, troubleshoot, and repair earthmoving equipment in the field and in shop environments. The Field Technician must successfully complete on‑the‑job training, classroom instruction, and e‑learning. Successful candidates demonstrate initiative, strong teamwork, a commitment to customer service, and a dedication to providing efficient, effective solutions.

Advancement in Technician classification is based on attitude, skill development, and overall job performance.

  • Adheres to and follows all applicable and required safety standards and procedures.
  • Plans and performs minor repairs using correct tools and procedures.
  • Performs the following tasks on engines, hydraulics, transmissions, and electrical components: remove and install; disassemble and reassemble; minor adjustments as needed for service.
  • Perform preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and troubleshooting
  • Demonstrates proper use of service information systems
  • Orders and return parts for assigned jobs in timely manner
  • Test and adjust components for optimal performance
  • Works independently in the field as required
  • Must have a valid driver’s license to be eligible for hire.

Education

High school diploma or the equivalent

Experience

  • A minimum of one (1) year's work experience involving mechanical repairs or a combination of relevant experience and equivalent technical education required.
  • Experience using personal computers and basic typing skills required.
  • Med Card and CDL preferred.
  • MVR (required)

Skills and Competencies

  • Intermediate engine, transmission, hydraulic, and electrical diagnostic, and repair skills
  • Written and verbal communication skills required.
  • Basic computer skills required.

Job Training

  • Area specific technical training
  • OSHA and MSHA required training.
  • Vendor technical sites (Infocast, Liftnet, SIMSi, etc.)

  • Work typically normally performed in a Service Department shop or on location at customer job sites.
