Field Technician

JOB SUMMARY

The Field Technician is responsible for all aspects of railcar cleaning and the inspection, care and maintenance of equipment used in the cleaning process. The role includes safe confined space entries with appropriate personal protective equipment to clean the interior of tank and hopper cars in compliance with Tactical Cleaning policies and procedures. The Field Technician informs the Shop Manager of issues related to assigned duties.

DUTIES

• Inspect and clean railcar interiors for compliance with customer, FRA, AAR and Tactical Cleaning requirements.
• Complete cleaning checklists as required.
• Maintain a clean and safe work environment, following company guidelines and the Health and Safety Program.
• Maintain clear communication with fellow co-workers and management.
• Use water, an abrasive, or sand to clean the interior of railcars or tank cars.
• Dispose of materials properly according to EPA requirements.
• Maintain proper maintenance and cleaning of equipment including sprayers, nozzles, hoses, catch basins, etc.
• Ensure permits, QA/QC and all tank car cleaning documentation is completed and distributed to necessary parties.
• Assist with setup, troubleshooting, and operation of the diesel cleaning system.
• Adhere to production schedules and maintain regular attendance as required by the work schedule.
• Assist management with supplying information for daily reports and operational documents in an accurate and timely manner.
• Other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS

• Ability to climb ladders, tolerate confined spaces and heights, bend, stoop, stretch, lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs overhead on a consistent basis; work around heavy equipment and on top of, under and inside railcars and railroad tracks.
• Ability and willingness to work outside in adverse weather conditions.
• Willingness to wear safety equipment such as respirators, safety shoes, eye protection, hearing protection, gloves, hard hats, and protective suits.
• Ability to operate a computer and basic software (MS Word, MS Excel).
• Willingness to be trained on Hazwoper, Confined Space, First Aid, Hazardous Materials, and other safety or OSHA training.
• Knowledge of equipment and tools required for safe entry for cleaning (sandblasting / power washing equipment).
• Ability to follow oral or written instructions.
• Vision correctable to 20/20 for inspection activities.
• Ability to pass a company-required physical examination and drug/alcohol screen.
• Ability to pass a company-required respiratory wellness test and respirator fit test.
• Availability to work overtime hours.
• Availability to travel approximately 50% - 75% of the time, including overnight stays from mobile or fixed job sites.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no direct supervision.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

A High School Diploma or GED is preferred. A minimum of 1 year of proven successful experience in freight car/tank car is preferred; a combination of education and experience is acceptable. Experience with heavy construction, cleaning, and/or repair equipment will be considered.
