JOB SUMMARY

The Safety Lead is a working field role that supports the Shop Manager and Safety Director by actively monitoring safety practices and ensuring compliance with Tactical Cleaning’s safety policies. This individual serves as a first responder to site hazards, supports new employee safety onboarding, and promotes a safety-focused culture through daily oversight, documentation, and routine site inspections.

The lead is responsible for informing the Shop Manager and Safety Manager of issues related to their assigned duties.

DUTIES AND REQUIREMENTS include the following. Other duties may be assigned as necessary by direct manager. In order to perform the essential functions of the job, the incumbent must possess, at a minimum, the following skills and abilities. DAILY DUTIES:

  • Perform periodic site walks to identify and report unsafe conditions.
  • Monitor and ensure proper use of PPE by all site personnel.
  • Conduct daily tailgate safety meetings and Job Safety Analyses (JSA) with the Shop Manager.
  • Inspect confined space areas for proper signage and permit posting.
  • Perform and document initial gas readings before railcar and/or tank entries.
  • Ensure gas monitors are tested (bump tests), in use, and readings are accurately recorded.
  • Document photos of hazards or damaged equipment to safety manager and shop manager.
  • Inspect and ensure containers (drums, totes, tanks) are properly sealed and labeled.

WEEKLY DUTIES:

  • Conduct safety meetings and retain attendance records.
  • Complete and submit safety checklists to the Safety Manager.
  • Inspect fire extinguishers, eyewash stations, and first aid kits for ease of access and functionality.
  • Verify expiration dates on PPE, gas monitors, and filters.
  • Assess the condition of and retain maintenance logs for heavy equipment and company vehicles on site with the assistance of the Shop Manager.
  • Oversee proper documentation and handling of roll-off boxes.
  • Inspect harnesses and lanyards for damage or contamination.
  • Conduct SPCC inspections.

OTHER DUTIES AS NECESSARY:

  • Report all incidents, near-misses, or hazards to management immediately.
  • Assist in the investigation process to ensure that proper documentation is completed for incidents or injuries that may arise. This may include collecting names, times, and photos.
  • Support the shop manager with onboarding new employees: safety paperwork, training setup, PPE guidance, etc.
  • Ensure emergency plans and SPCC plans are reviewed and communicated.
  • Keep safety boards updated with topics and contact information.
  • Maintain clear communication with fellow co-workers and management.
  • Have the commitment to report to work, when needed or as business conditions warrant the need.
  • Other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to climb ladders, tolerate confined spaces and heights, bend, stoop, stretch, lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs overhead on a consistent basis. This includes working safely around heavy equipment and on top of, under and inside railcars, and railroad tracks.
  • Ability and willingness to work outside in adverse weather conditions.
  • Willingness and ability to wear safety equipment such as, but not limited to, respirators, safety shoes eye protection, hearing protection, gloves, hard hats, and a variety of protective suits.
  • Ability to operate a computer to perform daily work activities, with an understanding of basic computer software (MS Word, MS Excel).
  • Ability and willingness to be trained on Hazwoper courses, Confined Spacing, First-Aid, Hazardous Materials, and other required safety and/or OSHA training.
  • Knowledge of equipment and tools required to perform safe entry for cleaning (Familiarity with Flaring / Power Washing equipment).
  • Ability to follow oral or written instructions.
  • Have vision correctable to 20/20 for inspection activities.
  • Ability to pass a company required physical examination and drug and alcohol screen.
  • Ability to pass a company required respiratory wellness test and respirator fit test.
  • Have a valid driver's license.
  • Availability to work overtime hours.
  • Availability to travel approximately 50% - 60% of the time including overnight stays from either mobile or other fixed job sites.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

A High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) is preferred.

A minimum of 1 year of proven successful experience in safety and/or freight car/tank car experience is preferred; a combination of education and experience is required. Experience working with heavy construction, cleaning, and/or repair equipment will be considered.

Certifications or documented completion of OSHA 30-Hour training, Confined Space Entry & Rescue, HAZWOPER, and/or First Aid/CPR/AED training are preferred.
