Job summary

Clemson University is seeking a Field Studies Instructor to plan, lead and implement outdoor programs for campers, including field studies and camp activities in Pickens, SC.

This is a full-time temporary (TMP) staff position with a 37.5-hour work week and a compensation range of $500–$600 per week.

Responsibilities include program management, supervision, safety, and equipment maintenance, with emphasis on participant safety and engaging outdoor education.

  • Safety: knows and understands all emergency procedures; maintains campers' safety and whereabouts; keeps incident reports and logs.
  • Equipment Management: sets-up, maintains and breaks down the site; maintains inventory; reports equipment failures; assists with routine cleanup.

JOB SUMMARY:

Field Studies Instructors are responsible for planning, leading and implementing programs and experiences in outdoor environments. They are also responsible for the general safety of the participants. Programs include Field Studies, 4-H Camp, Camp Wildlife, Camp Voyager, Adventure Camp, Camp Sewee, Camp Long. Other duties as assigned.

JOB DUTIES:
  • 35% - Program Management: Assists in planning and teaching all components of the education/program/recreational areas assigned which may include: environmental educational classes, canoeing, teams course, high ropes, climbing wall, recreation, arts & crafts, swimming, tubing, paintball, games and archery. Assists and leads participants in special recreational events. Works with camp directors in creating the weekly schedule for camp groups. Is flexible to changes as needed.
  • 25% - Supervision: Counselors are responsible for the supervision and safety of all participants in their care. Leads campers to and from programs and activities. Identifies and responds to participant behavior issues. Communicates with parents about participants experiences and report any concerns to camp leadership.
  • 25% - Safety: Knows and understands all emergency procedures associated with the program. Is responsible for campers safety and their whereabouts at all times. Maintains accurate program records including incident reports, logbook documentation and daily CUMIS reports.
  • 15% - Equipment Management: Sets-up, maintains and breaks down the site and program areas. Maintains inventory, returns all equipment used to storage area in good working order. Reports any equipment failures or replacement needs. Assists with routine cleanup of facilities used. All other duties assigned by the Program Director or Assistant Director.

COMPENSATION INFORMATION:

Expected Salary Range

$500/week - $600/week

Salary is dependent upon several factors including, but not limited to, a candidate's previous experience, knowledge, skills and performance in accordance with Clemson's compensation guidelines.

ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL LEVEL:

Normal Operations - Required to follow emergency facility closure and modified operations directives, and not normally expected to work on-site during emergency situations.
