Job summary

VetJobs seeks a Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO) in San Francisco, CA to support the HSE Director in implementing safety, health, and environmental policies on federal projects. The SSHO will lead day‑to‑day safety activities, ensure compliance with the Health and Safety Program, and manage hazard controls on site.

The role requires five-plus years in safety, OSHA HAZWOPER training, and BCSP certification preferred; will work with federal clients including USACE, Navy, and DOE.

Qualifications

  • Five or more years of experience in environmental remediation, construction, or general safety.
  • OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER with yearly updates.
  • BCSP certification preferred (STS, CHST).
  • Experience with USACE Safety and Health Requirements Manual (EM385-1-1) preferred.
  • Proficient computer skills to track and document project information.

Responsibilities

  • Set safety standards and ensure implementation.
  • Determine PPE levels with HSE Director and ensure availability.
  • Conduct safety trainings and tailgate sessions for employees.
  • Perform daily site safety inspections.
  • Coordinate air monitoring as directed by HSE Director or 3rd party.
  • Maintain safety records including training, SDS, and hazard communication.
  • Communicate program effectiveness and recommend changes.
  • Enforce PPE usage and high safety standards.
  • Manage chemical inventory, labeling, permits, and waste disposal.
  • Identify risks and STOP WORK when necessary.
