Job summary

Motorola Solutions in Northern Virginia is seeking a skilled Field Service Technician to support on-site installation, provisioning, and maintenance of subscriber radios and related systems. You will troubleshoot, repair, and optimize mission-critical communications hardware and software in a high-security environment.

The role requires 2+ years of experience, FCC GROL or CET Associate certification, valid US travel, and the ability to work on-site at a government-facing facility.

Job Description

Job Responsibilities:

• Codeplug Development:Develop complex subscriber radio codeplugs highly customized to the customer’s specific requirements, demanding deep technical knowledge, skill, and a strict focus on quality.


• Provisioning & Deployment:Execute the initial provisioning, implementation, and deployment of subscriber and infrastructure equipment.


• Maintenance & Repair:Maintain, test, and repair LMR subscribers and complex communications systems. Because all equipment serviced at our facility is encrypted, this includes working extensively with Secure Products.


• Component & Accessory Analysis:Regularly analyze batteries and antennas, and repair and maintain mobile radio accessories to ensure peak operational readiness.


• Preventative Maintenance:Perform preventative maintenance with a focus on trend analysis, and develop solutions to difficult technical problems encountered during maintenance or upgrades.


• Vehicle Installation: Remove, install, troubleshoot, repair, and perform preventative maintenance (PM) on subscriber mobile radios in vehicles at a company-owned facility or customer site. This essential duty requires strong mechanical, hands-on skills paired with technical expertise.


• Administration & Training:Create user handouts, prepare job tickets, material requests, and trip reports. Complete daily logs, submit weekly reports, and conduct training at field locations or the service center.


• System Support:Provide technical support, advanced troubleshooting of software-driven electronics, and performance optimization for specialized systems (including legacy analog, advanced digital P25, data infrastructure, and RF/Broadband architecture).

Technical Skills & Expertise:

• RF & Communications:Strong knowledge of R.F. systems (transmitters, receivers, antenna networks). Total familiarity with the latest technologies and troubleshooting techniques is expected. Expertise in Motorola SmartZone, Smartnet, ASTRO (Conventional and Trunked), Secure Operations, ASTRO A7.x Digital systems, and P25 is strongly preferred.


• Equipment & Encryption:Hands-on experience with Motorola APX series subscribers and Secure Products is required. Experience with Base Stations (Consolette, GTR series, Quantar), Consoles, and Motorola Radio Programming Software is expected.


• IT & Networking:Solid understanding of server hardware/OS maintenance, LAN/WAN, IP networks, cabling, routers, switches, firewalls, bridges, standard telephony, dedicated data circuits, and packet switching. Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Access) and Google Workspace applications.


• Test Equipment:Skilled with Communication System Analyzers, Site Masters, Ethernet Link test sets, TIMS, and Digital RF Power Meters.


• Certifications: FCC GROL License or CET Associate (or higher) is required; a network certification (Network+, CCNA, NRS1) is highly desired.

Candidate Requirements & Clearances:

• Work Location: Our team mission requires the successful candidate to report on-site to our facility in Northern Virginia, making this a fully in-person role.


• Education:Associate's Degree, Technical Certificate, or Technical Military Training is required. A 2-year Associate's Degree in Electronics or IT is highly preferred.


• Experience:Requires 2+ years of experience (or equivalent Military training) as a Field Service Technician demonstrating high-level systems expertise in LMR, RF Systems, Telecommunications, IT, or Networking.


• Travel & Logistics: Willingness to travel both CONUS and OCONUS; requires a valid driver’s license and a U.S. Passport (or willingness to obtain one).


• Quality Standards:Maintain an exceptional quality of work with strict adherence to ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System (QMS) standards, as our facility is ISO registered and UL certified.


• Professionalism & Teamwork: Teamwork is vital to our department's success. Candidates must possess a strong work ethic, high self‑motivation, and the interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with customers, subcontractors, and internal teams (Sales, Engineering, Project Management, Customer Service). Candidates must be coachable and capable of acting on guidance effectively.

Candidate Requirements:

• Must be a U.S. citizen capable of obtaining government security clearances as required by our government contracts.


• Must be willing to obtain a DHS Public Trust Clearance as required by government contract(s).


• Legal authorization to work in the U.S. indefinitely is required. Employer work permit sponsorship is not available for this position.

This position is subject to working in high security areas governed by the US Department of Justice's "Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Security Policy" and therefore requires successfully passing a more stringent fingerprint background check administered by Motorola Solutions Inc. customers.

Target Base Salary Range: $60,000 - $70,000 USD

Consistent with Motorola Solutions values and applicable law, we provide the following information to promote pay transparency and equity. Pay within this range varies and depends on job‑related knowledge, skills, and experience. The actual offer will be based on the individual candidate.

• Associates Degree OR Technical Certificate OR Technical Military Training AND 2+ years of experience with one or more of the following: IT, Networking, LMR, RF Systems, Radio Communications, Radio Frequency, Motorola equipment, Wired/Wireless Communication Systems, IT Systems, Telecommunications, Public Safety, Engineering, Networking Equipment, IP Networking, Solutions Architecture, ASTRO 25, P25, WAVE VoIP, or Military experience.


• Must be a U.S. citizen capable of obtaining government security clearances as required by our government contracts.
