Job summary

HOLT CAT is seeking a Field Service Technician IV to troubleshoot, diagnose, repair, and recondition light and heavy construction equipment at an off-site location in Waco, Texas. The role supports the Machine Division (MAC) and is a full-time opportunity requiring extensive on-site expertise.

The technician will lead others, complete service reports, and maintain DOT logs while ensuring safety, tool calibration, and accuracy in repairs.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • MSHA certification preferred.
  • Air conditioning certification preferred.
  • Crane/Rigger certifications preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Work safely at all times and adhere to all applicable safety policies; comply with company policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Perform intermediate repairs and troubleshooting on site with minimal supervision.
  • Perform intermediate troubleshooting, diagnose equipment malfunctions, and conduct failure analysis.
  • Remove and install parts, disassemble and assemble components to Caterpillar specifications.
  • Test, make adjustments, and verify proper operation of all repairs and adjustments.
  • Prepare and complete all job-related documents, write service reports, order parts, and maintain clear customer records; access required databases to complete jobs.
  • Act as a team leader and mentor/co-operate with lower-level technicians.
  • Participate in the quotation of work orders.
  • Operate equipment and vehicles with possession of all necessary licenses and certificates.
  • Maintain service vehicle inspection records, daily inspections, and driver logs as required by the Department of Transportation.
  • Adhere to contamination control and HAZMAT rules and regulations.
  • Maintain all company equipment, tools, and vehicles in a good, clean, and working order.
  • Communicate job progress to supervisor and customer as needed.
  • Complete assigned jobs and tasks to meet flat-rate time and re-work standards.
  • Work overtime as required by workload and customers' needs.
  • Complete all assigned Technician Training Path courses and safety training in a timely and proficient manner.
  • Project professionalism with both internal and external customers, including personal appearance; serve as a mentor to lower-level technicians.
  • Require regular and punctual employee attendance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

The Field Service Technician IV provides face‑to‑face customer service located at an off‑site location and is responsible for troubleshooting, diagnosing, repairing, and reconditioning various light and heavy construction equipment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of safe work procedures and practices.
  • Knowledge of equipment and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Intermediate knowledge of hydraulics, transmissions, engines, undercarriage, and electrical systems.
  • Proficiency with current computer software, related hardware, and knowledge of machine electronic systems.
  • Exceptional customer service skills.
  • Intermediate diagnostic and troubleshooting skills.
  • Planning and organizing skills to prioritize and plan work activities; use time efficiently; plan for additional resources.
  • Operation and control skills of equipment or systems.
  • Equipment selection skills to determine the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to operate a crane and forklift, and obtain required certifications/licenses.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work under fast‑paced, time‑constraining circumstances.
  • Ability to operate hand tools, power tools, pneumatic tools, and equipment used in mechanical repair.
  • Ability to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects.
Requirements

Education and Experience:

  • More than four years of heavy equipment experience required; six or more years preferred.
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • MSHA certification preferred.
  • Air conditioning certification preferred.
  • Crane/Rigger certifications preferred.

Supervisory Responsibilities: None.

Travel: Travel required with a possibility of an overnight stay.

Additional Requirements:

  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Ability to obtain a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and maintain an acceptable driving record.
  • Must own required tools to perform repairs.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to move objects, using abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue.
  • Frequently move materials or equipment weighing up to 80 lb.
  • Constant movement and use of limbs; position requires good manual dexterity, coordination, and stamina.
  • Ascend/descend with gradual or continuous progress by oneself, using both hands and feet; climb up and down ladders and/or equipment.
  • Be able to maneuver safely and work underneath equipment.
  • Routine response to visual, auditory, and other signals, including alarms and instructions, and visually inspect work.

Work Environment:

  • Requires wearing common protective or safety equipment.
  • Regularly works outdoors around moving mechanical parts; noise level may be loud at times.
  • May be exposed to weather extremes when working outside in conditions that include inclement weather, heat, cold, and humidity.
  • Exposure to small quantities of chemicals, dust, steam, high‑pressure water, and high‑speed rotating equipment.
  • Required to perform work in cramped spaces and/or high places.
