Job summary

Holt CAT in Georgetown, Texas is seeking an Electrical Power Generator - Field Service Tech to troubleshoot and repair power generation equipment, gas and diesel engines, and ATS (Automatic Transfer Switches). This full-time role requires daily travel across Texas with possible overnight assignments and overtime, including weekends.

Job description

Holt CAT is the largest Caterpillar dealership of heavy equipment in the United States. We have a full-time Electrical Power Generator - Field Service Tech position available at our Georgetown, Texas location. The hours of the position are Monday-Friday 7 AM to 4 PM with possible overtime, including weekends. Daily travel and overnight travel are required throughout Texas.

Job Description

This role is responsible for providing troubleshooting and high-quality repair service on power generation, gas and diesel engines, and ATS (Automatic Transfer Switches). The technician will respond to customers positively, safely, and timely to ensure maximum value for work performed.

Essential Functions
  • Work safely at all times and adhere to all applicable safety policies; comply with all company policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Perform basic to intermediate repairs and minimal troubleshooting offsite with minimal supervision.
  • Perform basic to intermediate troubleshooting and minimal diagnoses of equipment malfunctions and failures.
  • Remove and install parts, disassemble and assemble components to CAT specifications.
  • Test, make adjustments, and verify proper operation of all repairs and adjustments.
  • Prepare and complete all job‑related documents, write service reports, order parts, and maintain clear customer records; access databases required to complete job.
  • Operate equipment and vehicles with possession of all necessary licenses and certificates.
  • Maintain service vehicle inspection records, daily inspections and driver logs as required by the Department of Transportation.
  • Adhere to contamination control and HAZMAT rules and regulations.
  • Maintain all company equipment, tools, and vehicle in a good, clean, and working order.
  • Communicate job progress to supervisor and customer as needed.
  • Complete assigned jobs and tasks to meet flat‑rate time and re‑work standards.
  • Work overtime as required by workload and customers' needs.
  • Complete all assigned Technician Training Path courses and safety training in a timely and proficient manner.
  • Project professionalism with both internal and external customers, including personal appearance; may be relied upon to act as a mentor to lower‑level technicians.
  • Require regular and punctual employee attendance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • A qualified candidate must have the following skills or abilities:
  • At least 3 years of field or shop service tech troubleshooting and repair skills of Electrical Power and Generator experience.
  • At least 3 years of field or shop service tech troubleshooting and repair skills of Natural Gas and Diesel Engine experience.
  • At least 3 years of field or shop service tech troubleshooting and repair skills of ATS (Automatic Transfer Switches) and GENERATORS experience.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Excellent customer service skills; must be able to effectively communicate, both written and verbal, with customers and employees in a professional manner.
  • Must have own tools.
  • Must have a safe driving history.
  • Ability to be productive by working efficiently and effectively with a high energy level.
  • Ability to work with limited supervision.
  • Must be able to work Monday-Friday from 7 AM - 4 PM.
  • Must be on-call two weeks out of the month.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of safe work procedures and practices.
  • Basic knowledge of equipment and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Basic knowledge of hydraulics, transmissions, engines, undercarriage, and electrical.
  • Demonstrates proficiency with current computer software, related hardware, and basic knowledge of machine electronic systems.
  • Exceptional skills in customer service.
  • Basic diagnostic and trouble‑shooting skills.
  • Planning and organizing skills to prioritize and plan work activities; use time efficiently; plan for additional resources.
  • Operation and control skills of equipment or systems.
  • Equipment selection skills to determine the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to operate a crane and forklift, and obtain required certifications/licenses.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work under fast‑paced, time‑constraining circumstances.
  • Ability to operate hand tools, power tools, pneumatic tools, and equipment used in mechanical repair.
  • The ability to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects.
Requirements
Education and Experience
  • More than two years of heavy equipment experience; three or more years preferred.
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • MSHA certification preferred.
  • Air conditioning certification preferred.
  • Crane/Rigger certifications preferred.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • None.
Travel
  • Travel required with a possibility of an overnight stay.
Additional Requirements
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Ability to obtain a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with an acceptable driving record.
  • Must own required tools to perform repairs.
Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to move objects, and use abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue.
  • Frequently moves materials or equipment weighing up to 80 lb.
  • Constant movement and use of limbs; requires good manual dexterity, coordination, and stamina.
  • Ascends/descends with gradual or continuous progress alone, using both hands and feet; climbs up and down ladders and/or equipment.
  • Be able to maneuver safely and work underneath equipment.
  • Routinely reacts to visual, auditory, and other signals, including alarms and instructions; required to visually inspect work.
Work Environment
  • Requires wearing common protective or safety equipment.
  • Regularly works outdoors around moving mechanical parts; noise level may be loud at times.
  • May be exposed to weather extremes; heat, cold, and humidity.
  • Exposure to small quantities of chemicals, dust, steam, high‑pressure water, and high‑speed rotating equipment.
  • Required to perform work in cramped spaces and/or high places.
