Job summary

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED; plus one year in water meter repair or closely related experience.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License.
• Must possess and maintain a Florida DEP Level 3+ Water Distribution System Operator License; if not, must attain within 1.5 years of employment.
• Employee must obtain ICS-100 and IS-700 NIMS courses within six months of employment.

Responsibilities

• Read meters on assigned route and record readings to support accurate billing.
• Maintain meter reading records and notices; collect delinquent payments when applicable.
• Install, maintain and repair meters; check for leaks and improper taps; report issues.
• Test meters for accuracy and manage parts inventory; replace damaged parts and lids.
• Assist customers with consumption questions and advise on corrective measures.

PUBLIC WORKS/UTILITY DEPARTMENT: WATER & SEWER

Under direction, this is responsible work involving meter reading, meter maintenance, meter calibration, customer interaction and other duties related to utility work. Employees in this classification are responsible for reading meters, recording consumption and repairing meters. Objective is to support correct and timely billing of metered services by accurately and efficiently recording meter readings along a clearly designated work route. Although the employee works independently and is often physically removed from supervision, duties are performed within the framework of pre-established policies and procedures.

• Reads meters on an assigned work route and records readings; enters data on meter readings into computer in order to provide records of services; prepares statistical reports on water service activities.
• Maintains meter reading records, leaves notice and submits reports of inaccessible meters; collects funds for delinquent accounts.
• Installs and maintains meters.
• Checks meters for water leakage, proper operation, and illegal water taps; pumps water from meters, if necessary, and determines source of leaks; reports leaks to property owner or supervisor, depending on source of leak.
• Tests meters for accuracy; maintains parts inventory records.
• Replaces broken meter lids; repairs and rebuilds meters and registers; replaces registers and worn out parts; completes forms and reports on accounts to document services performed and status of account.
• Monitors consistency of readings and reports any deviation from usual consumption.
• Assists customers in identifying consumption problems and recommends corrective measures.

ADDITIONAL POSITION FUNCTIONS

Performs related duties as directed when such duties are a logical and appropriate assignment to the position.

High School Diploma or GED; supplemented by one (1) year experience in water meter repair and maintenance or closely related experience.

Must possess and maintain a current and valid Florida Driver's License.

Must possess and maintain a Florida Department of Environmental Protection Level 3 or higher Water Distribution System Operator License. Employee without said license/certification will be allowed one year and six months (1.5 years) from date of employment with the City of Sanford to attain this license/certification.

Employee shall obtain the National Incident Management System (ICS-100) Introduction to the Incident Command System and IS-700 National Incident Management System, An Introduction within six (6) months of employment. The following courses are designed to provide a baseline, as they introduce basic NIMS and IC concepts and provide the foundation for higher-level Emergency Operations Center (EOC), MACS, and IC-related training.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

While performing the essential functions of this job, the incumbent is regularly required to lift, move or carry objects up to 50 pounds; ascend or descend ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles; utilize feet and legs or hands and arms; maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, crouching, or navigating narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces; bend body downward and forward by bending spine and legs; move about on hands and knees or hands and feet; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects; and to reach with hands and arms.

While performing the essential functions of this position the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, excessive noise, vehicles, dampness/humidity, biting insects and unrestrained animals. While performing the essential functions of this job, the incumbent is regularly exposed to possible bodily injury from electrical shock; falling from exposed places; and moving mechanical parts of equipment, tools, and machinery.
