Position Overview
The part time Field Technician role is a skilled position responsible for independently performing equipment diagnostics, repairs, maintenance, and installations across a range of commercial coffee equipment.
This role requires a balance of technical expertise, problem-solving ability, and enlightened hospitality, as technicians regularly interact with clients in fast-paced cafe environments. Technicians are expected to manage service calls from start to finish, communicate clearly with internal and external partners, and uphold high standards of safety, organization, and professionalism.
Core Responsibilities
- Perform in-field service calls independently on espresso machines (semi-automatic and super-automatic), grinders, brewers, and cold brew systems
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair mechanical, electrical, and basic software-related issues
- Complete preventative maintenance, installations, decommissions, and site visits
- Conduct in-shop repairs for more complex or long-term service work
- Communicate service updates, timelines, and solutions to internal teams and clients via Slack, phone, and email
- Navigate equipment programming menus and perform basic software updates
- Coordinate with manufacturers’ technical support when needed
- Receive, process, and organize equipment and parts deliveries in accordance with SOPs
- Maintain organized tools, parts inventory, and workspace (“mise en place”)
- Uphold safety standards when working with water, electricity, and heavy equipment
Performance Expectations
- Ability to independently complete service calls end-to-end
- Strong diagnostic and problem-solving skills
- Consistent, professional communication with clients and team members
- Adherence to safety and operational standards
- Ability to perform routine preventative maintenance procedures
- Ability to handle limited-information dispatches and effectively diagnose issues with incomplete details
- Ability to calibrate grinders, replace burrs, and troubleshoot across equipment brands
Growth Path
Technicians who successfully complete milestones and show growth in the following areas (typically within 2+ years) may be promoted to: Field Technician Specialist.
Progression is based on:
- Ability to perform maintenance and service across a wider range of equipment brands, including but not limited to: La Marzocco, Eversys, Slayer, Mahlkonig, Curtis, Fiorenzato, Fetco, Baratza, Mazzer
- High levels of innovation and initiative, including but not limited to: regarding identifying potential areas for growth and problem solving, areas to generate further revenue, skills that correlate to specialized strategies that can be added to the overall service plan for the department.

Compensation & Legal Compliance
This is a non-exempt position and is eligible for overtime in accordance with federal, state, and local laws

QualificationsPreferred Experience
- 3–5+ years of barista or specialty coffee experience strongly preferred
- Previous experience as a coffee technician
- Familiarity with commercial espresso equipment (e.g., La Marzocco, grinders, brewers)
- Exposure to Enlightened Hospitality principles
Required Skills & Abilities
- Ability to independently diagnose and resolve equipment issues
- Basic understanding of plumbing and electrical systems; ability to use a multimeter
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting technical manuals
- Strong time management and ability to prioritize multiple service calls
- Comfortable working independently and in a team environment
- Strong communication skills and professionalism in client-facing situations
- Ability to collaborate with manufacturer tech support
- High level of accountability, reliability, and attention to detail
- Valid driver’s license and/or ability to reliably navigate NYC public transit
Physical Requirements & Core Capabilities
This role requires:
- Ability to lift, push, and pull up to 75 lbs (with or without assistance)
- Standing, walking, and being on your feet for extended periods of time
- Frequent bending, kneeling, crouching, and reaching in tight or confined spaces
- Navigating busy cafe environments and workshop settings safely and efficiently
- Transporting tools and equipment between job sites using public transit
- Strong attention to detail and willingness to follow procedures
- Clear communication and openness to feedback
- Strong sense of accountability and reliability
- Comfort working in fast-paced cafe environments
