Field Service Technician

We are hiring a talented Field Service Technician to join our team in Elgin, IL on a full-time basis. This role involves inspecting, repairing, installing, and starting up gear units and related transmission parts on customer sites.

Job Summary

The selected candidate will travel on field service calls to diagnose failures, determine corrective actions, read and work from blueprints, parts lists, and assembly protocols, and use a range of tools including parts washers, freezers, ovens, cranes, fork trucks, presses, torches, hand, and power tools. Responsibilities also include disassembling units, inspecting parts, writing reports on failures, and advising on replacements.

Job Responsibilities

• Service and maintain Flender standard gear units such as bevel, planetary, worm gear, mixer drive, mill drive, single and double screw extruder units, hoist and swing gear units, variator drives, marine drives, couplings, and their subassemblies.
• Troubleshoot errors and advise on corrective action.
• Escalate technical issues to supporting engineering functions.
• Self‑motivated and able to think quickly to address issues as they arise.
• Work a flexible schedule as required, including weekends.
• Analyze and resolve issues independently and efficiently.
• Write customer‑facing reports, including photography.
• Create expense reports.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Education, and Experience

• 10 years of experience in power transmission, heavy equipment assembly, or wind gearbox applications.
• Equivalent of 5 years’ experience in field service operations in power transmissions may substitute.
• Knowledge and experience with blueprints, the metric system, work standards, ISO, and quality documentation, basic gearing and bearings.
• Advanced mechanical skills.
• Experience with Microsoft Office, Outlook, Word, and Excel.
• Physically and mentally able to work suspended from heights and in confined spaces.
• Ability to climb stairs and ladders generally up to 125m in height.
• Ability to lift, push, pull, and carry items up to 50lbs.
• Ability to stand, stoop, kneel, and bend for prolonged periods.
• Flexible travel schedule.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Must meet body‑weight restrictions and use ladders and equipment safely.
• Must pass a physical administered by a medical practitioner to ensure ability to safely perform the job functions.
• Driving is an essential function; must have a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record and be subject to periodic DMV checks.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Education, and Experience

• Certification from MSHA.
• Hands‑on experience as a Field Service or Wind Technician on a wind farm.
• Relevant experience in electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, maintenance, or troubleshooting in a military, industrial, or automotive environment.
• Lathe experience is helpful but not required.
